Snowshoe with a Ranger

Galena Lodge

Learn about the history of the old Galena mining camp and about the local animals who leave their tracks in the snow during a free Snowshoe with a Ranger tour. The Sawtooth National Recreation Area is offering free snowshoe tours at 11 a.m. Thursdays through March 6th and at 10am March 13 & 20th, leaving from the porch of Galena lodge. The snowshoe trip lasts about two hours, covering 1.5 miles with stops along the way. Tour-goers will learn about the winter ecology and more during the tour. A free one-day Blaine County Recreation district snowshoe pass will be provided. Snowshoes can be rented at Galena Lodge. Snowshoers are advised to dress warmly in layers, wear insulated waterproof boots, gloves, hats,  sunglasses and sunscreen. Dogs and other pets are not allowed on these particular tours. No reservations are necessary. To learn more, call the SNRA at 208-727-5000. An intimate journey into the sketchbook world and how drawing can offer a moment of stillness and peace within an often chaotic world. Led by artist Leslie Rego. Thursdays, February 27 - March 27, 2025 (five Thursdays). Registration required. This workshop series offers a welcoming and supportive space for people interested in drawing the natural world. The focus will be on nature journaling. Prompts will be offered as well as guidance. Each session we will jump down a “rabbit hole” and study in depth one plant or landscape element or learn about different brushes, paints, papers, and other art supplies. A list of recommended supplies will be sent to registered participants. Leslie Rego has drawn in journals for years. She carries sketchbooks and paints with her while enjoying the national forest and will take time to draw and paint landscapes and flowers on her many hikes. Leslie wrote the "Sketchbook Hiking" article in The Weekly Sun for many years. She has artwork in private collections, The Sun Valley Lodge and around the world.

“Realm of Ice and Sky” with Buddy Levy

From Arctic explorer and American visionary Walter Wellman who pioneered both polar and trans-Atlantic airship aviation, to American explorer Dr. Frederick Cook who was the first to claim he made it to the North Pole in 1908, and Norwegian explorer extraordinaire Roald Amundsen who attempted to fly to the North Pole by airship, Levy's newest book is a serial history of the aerial explorations to reach the summit of the Earth. Book signing to follow. Buddy Levy is an award-winning author known for his books on arctic history. His last book, "Empire of Ice and Stone: The Disastrous and Heroic Voyage of the Karluk," won the 2023 National Outdoor Book Award and was a finalist for the 2023 Banff Mountain Book Competition. Levy is the author of more than ten books, including "Labyrinth of Ice: The Triumphant and Tragic Greely Polar Expedition," and "River of Darkness: Francisco Orellana’s Legendary Voyage of Death and Discovery Down the Amazon." His books have been published in eight languages and won numerous awards. He lives in Idaho.

Full Moon Fat Bike Ride

Under the full moon we will explore the valley by fat bikes! Monthly from November through March we will meet at 6pm to enjoy an evening ride on the full month. Wood River Writers’ Focused Writing Group

Saturdays, November 2 – April 5, from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm Co-work with a community of writers the first Saturday of each month for focused writing and craft discussions and connect to other writers from the Wood River Valley and beyond! All writing abilities and ages welcome. Join us in The Community Library’s Idaho Room, or online via Zoom. The Wood River Writers’ Groups are led by AJ Super, a local author with a trilogy of science fiction books published by a small traditional press. She is also a Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers’ Association (SFWA) member.
