The Community Library

Double feature of two short films."Chief Tendoy," (2021) a short historical western film directed by Steve Saxon and Cesar Rodriguez, about an event in the life of the prominent leader of the Northern Shoshone. When many believed that "the only good Indian is a dead Indian," Chief Tendoy has an encounter with President Ulysses Grant that culminates in a duel of the titans where injustice, theft of land, and violation of treaties are debated. This film will be introduced by Leo Arriwite. The second film, "In Good Faith," (2018) is a documentary that illuminates the history of the unratified treaty between the U.S. Government and the Lemhi Shoshone people. Shot in Idaho and Montana, 'In Good Faith' reveals new discoveries about a Native American tribe, their unratified treaty with the United States and a historical revelation that could change the history of southwestern Montana. Jared Chastain will introduce this film. Location: John A. and Carole O. Moran Lecture Hall at The Community Library. Discussion after the films. Gail Severn Gallery

This group exhibition celebrates the various means by which artists achieve texture and movement within their work. Pegan Brooke’s oil paintings both minimalist and monochromatic, mimic the atmospheric qualities of water through the use of metallic pigments and staccato brushstrokes. Abstract painter, Raphaëlle Goethals is known for her signature layered encaustic and sophisticated minimalism, fusing to create non-representational masterpieces. Her works are void of any sense of gravity, with emphasis on light, texture, and emotive color. Working with the simplest of materials, fiber artist Lisa Kokin explores texture using cord and threads. Embedding found and recycled materials into industrial felt, Kokin playfully arranges seemingly disparate materials. Visit www.gailseverngallery.com or call (208) 726-5079 for hours of operation.

Flowers

Gail Severn Gallery

From Van Gogh's vibrant still lifes to the intricate floral patterns in traditional Japanese woodblock prints, flowers have been often depicted in art to convey profound emotions and meditate on our connection to the natural world across time periods. This group exhibition will feature artists that consider art's floral history and play with the flower as subject. Included are the intricate graphite drawings of Maggie Shafran, large scale photography by Laura McPhee, and oil paintings by Kathy Moss and Diane Andrews Hall. Visit www.gailseverngallery.com or call (208) 726-5079 for hours of operation.

Honoring our Landscape XII

Gail Severn Gallery

This group exhibition explores the artistic interpretation of our lands by three nationally renowned painters: Theodore Waddell, James Cook and Michael Gregory.  For Cook, thickly painted oils work as epic and expressive interpretation of our landscapes, many of which depict The Sawtooths and surrounding mountain ranges. Michael Gregory’s iconic paintings of barns and homesteads reflect the beauty of isolation found in the Western American Landscape. Also included are Laura McPhee’s large-format photographs and Gwynn Murrill's lively bronze-sculpted animals. Visit www.gailseverngallery.com or call (208) 726-5079 for hours of operation.

OPENING NIGHT RECEPTION for CUBBY WEST SPAIN & ANSLEY WEST RIVERS Exhibition

Hemmings Gallery

A joint show by two sisters who are inspired by the beauty and importance of preserving wilderness areas. Cubby West Spain is a painter who uses line and shape to find and define forms in the landscape. Working with gouache, watercolor, acrylic and oils, Spain paints subjects such as western landscapes and the American buffalo employing her distinct use of pattern and intentional brush strokes. Ansley West Rivers is an artist whose photographic practice focuses on the intersection of landscape and humanity. For the past ten years, Rivers has been photographing American rivers including her own watershed in Idaho’s Teton Valley. Using historical photographic techniques and a large format film camera, she layers several shots on each piece of film with masking made in camera to create an expansion on the singular landscape image.
