Join SVMoA Studio Coordinator Anne Aganon to learn basic drawing skills and shading techniques. Over a series of evenings, work from mannequins and still life set-ups to improve your drawing skills with a focus on the human figure and learn more about different drawing media. Use this time in January to prepare for the Open Studios: Figure Drawing or Open Studios: Printmaking sessions starting in February. Pre-registration for each class is recommended; walk-ins accommodated if space is available. Age & ability: 16 and older, all skill levels welcome! Introduction to Fly-Tying is designed for the beginner with no or minimal experience looking to tie their own flies. In this two-class series, instructor James Gillespie will teach students how to tie classic flies as he shares his knowledge of fly-tying tools, materials, and basic techniques. Participants will leave with the flies they create and the ability to tie a basic fly pattern. All materials and tools will be provided. No prior experience is necessary. If participants have any of their fly-tying tools, they are welcome to bring them. Age and ability: 16+ years old and beginners welcome This 2-session workshop takes place Thu, Jan 30 6–8pm and Thu, Feb 6, 6–8pm at the Hailey Classroom. All supplies will be provided by SVMoA. About the instructor: James Gillespie is a self-taught fisherman who has been fishing his entire life. Tying his own flies has always been a part of his love of fishing, and he looks forward to sharing what he knows with interested students.

Join the Friends of the Sawtooth Avalanche Center for a 90 minute presentation based on the Know Before You Go platform, introducing basic concepts about snow, avalanches, and traveling safely in and near avalanche terrain. Learn from the Friends of SAC instructor team of snow experts, mountain guides, and experienced avalanche educators. We invite everyone to join if you’re learning about avalanches for the first time or are a seasoned backcountry user ready for a yearly refresher. There is a $15 suggested donation, no preregistration required. In addition to the presentation, The Friends also put on Introduction to Avalanche Field Days. Join the Friends of the Sawtooth Avalanche Center instructors for a field day covering avalanche rescue basics, snowpack layering, avalanche terrain identification, and basic backcountry travel. Please note- you need to have attended a Friends’ Introduction to Avalanches presentation prior to participating in the field day. Try your hand at printmaking using a press. Cut a 4x6 linoleum block and do a simple one-color print. Work from images provided in the Open Studio, or bring in your own to work from. You are also welcome to bring your own paper to print on. Museum staff will assist with using the press and teaching some basics of printmaking. Build your own accessories that will last a lifetime out of Horween American-tanned leather seconds. Participant will hand-stitch a tote bag, perfect for everyday use and create additional accessories, like a key chain or wallets from the leather remnants. This leather with small blemishes has been rejected by larger companies, but can be manipulated to create the highest quality products that you will be proud to carry. Age & Ability: 18+, beginners welcome! This is a two-day workshop that takes place Saturday, February 22, and Sunday, February 23 from 10am-4pm at the Hailey Classroom. About the Instructor Morgan Buckert builds custom cowboy boots in her Hailey, Idaho workshop. Using traditional techniques and vintage machinery, Morgan builds cowboy boots and leather goods meant to last a lifetime.
