AROUND THE BEND by LOLA

Hemmings Gallery Walnut Avenue, Ketchum

'Tis the season to celebrate!! We're wrapping up this year with a stunning new show--AROUND THE BEND by Lola at Hemmings Gallery on 340 Walnut Ave. in Ketchum. Each work features Lola's mastery of the poured resin technique and the alluring quality of this uniquely modern material. For over a decade, Lola has been working with tinted resin in her Bay-area studio. Each piece consists of layered geometric shapes with an emphasis on color & tone-- all on her signature drip-edged panels. It's high-gloss and hard-to-resist. For Lola, "I'm always dreaming about what's next. What will excite and inspire others. As I pour the resin, a form begins to appear on the surface. The challenge is leaving the emotional tone of the piece undefined allowing the viewer to find their own meaning in the work."

Nick Brandt – The Echo of Our Voices

Gilman Contemporary 661 Sun Valley Rd, Sun Valley

Gilman Contemporary presents THE ECHO OF OUR VOICES, acclaimed photographer Nick Brandt’s poignant visual narrative showing the impact of water scarcity on a group of Syrian refugees, mostly families, in southern Jordan. Brandt’s portrayal is both respectful and tender, as he captures the resilience of the human spirit and the stabilizing effects of human connection in the face of adversity. Jordan is considered the second most water-scarce country in the world. The Syrian refugees depicted in these photographs were forced to flee Syria due to war. Now in Jordan they are forced to relocate multiple times a year in constant search of adequate rainfall for growing crops. Families are perched on stacks of boxes that aim skyward, implying a sense of strength and defiance. They also serve as pedestals for the individuals who typically go unseen and unnoticed. No longer able to avert our gaze, we are invited to look into the eyes of these courageous individuals and hear the soft echo of their voices.

Stargazing – Paintings by Kelly Ording

Gilman Contemporary 661 Sun Valley Rd, Sun Valley

The paintings in this series are inspired by Kelly Ording's practice of sungazing, a meditative ritual that that involves standing outside and gazing toward the sun to absorb its radiant energy. For Ording, the slow and methodical process of painting becomes an extension of this meditative ritual. Through rhythmic lines and geometric motifs, Ording’s luminous works evoke a sense of transcendence and invite viewers to connect with the natural rhythms of the world. Each line marks a fleeting moment and the passage of time, echoing the pulse of the universe and the cycles of the sun.

Thunderpussy At The Liberty

Liberty Theater 110 North Main Street, Hailey

Thunderpussy What is fire? From a scientific standpoint, many still aren’t sure. Heat and light, dancing and flare. We can describe its chemical reaction, but why—yes, why—it looks as it does, that’s still a deep curiosity. Fire, with its impossible to predict form, is a mystery. Fire is also West, the new studio album from the Seattle-born rock and roll group Thunderpussy. The band breathes it. Cultivates, tames and scorches with it. Fire, in the contemporary linguistic sense, is also a sign of all that is good. It’s that good burn. So, in that way, listeners of West are in for a titillating treat. The new LP begins with a promise. An internal affirmation, a hopeful prayer. Lithe lead singer Molly Sides declares, her voice like flame on the track, “I can do better.” Her sound, like her literal body onstage, bends and shifts. Incandescent. As lead guitar player Whitney Petty performs a rumbling echo, like felled timber. Fire is the sign of sustenance. It's no wonder, then, why Thunderpussy has earned attention from the important outlets in music culture. Yes, Rolling Stone has called the band “classic-rock muscle” focusing on the all-female group’s “soulful vocals and punk energy.” NPR ...
