Tickets: FREE, reservations at www.sunvalleyplaywrights.org
The evening begins with a conversation with Pulitzer Prize Finalist and two-time Obie Award winner Rajiv Joseph about his creative process, followed by a reading of his new play, HOROSCOPE, commissioned by Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency. Twelve characters, twelve scenes, twelve months of the year: HOROSCOPE centers on a group of twenty-somethings searching for meaning beyond their current orbit. The reading features Theatre Arts majors from Boise State University.
This program is supported, in part, by grants from Boise City Department of Arts & History, Idaho Commission on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts, Idaho Humanities Council, a State-based partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Spur Community Foundation. Additional support is provided by The Argyros, Boise Contemporary Theater, the School of the Arts and the Department of Theatre, Film, and Creative Writing at Boise State University, and The Community Library.
Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency (SVPR) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that offers emerging and established playwrights time and resources to write in an inspired Idaho setting while providing community events—including free play readings, high school playwriting workshops, and Q&As—that offer insight into writers’ creative processes. The Playwright’s Residency fosters new relationships between theatremakers and the Wood River Valley community and fuels the American theatre with new plays that speak to our collective humanity.
Annually, SVPR works with one playwright to foster a new play from idea to full draft, and we produce events centered on this playwright, their existing plays, and the new play they are writing. The playwright begins the residency with a month-long stay at the historic Ernest and Mary Hemingway House, which is owned and operated by The Community Library. Ernest Hemingway visited Idaho for more than two decades, and he made his final home here in 1959. The Hemingway House sits on 12 acres along the Big Wood River, looking out on the Pioneer and Boulder Mountains. After their stay at the Hemingway House, the writer returns home to continue writing the play with our continued support. The following fall, the writer returns to Idaho to workshop the new play, which culminates with a free public reading.
Resident Playwrights include Obie Award Winner David Cale (2021-2022), Pulitzer Prize Winner and Tony Award nominee Martyna Majok (2022-2023), Pulitzer Prize Finalist and two-time Obie Award Winner Rajiv Joseph (2023-2024), and Heideman Award Winner and Lortel Award nominee Max Posner (2024-2025). Other artists who have participated in SVPR’s programming include Pulitzer Prize Winner Eboni Booth, Tony Award nominee Marin Ireland, Ruby Prize Winner Kimber Lee, MCC’s former Tow Fellow CA Johnson, Atlantic Theatre Companys’ Tow Fellow Shayan Lotfi, and Tony Award nominee Les Waters. SVPR’s Board and Advisory Board includes prominent Wood River Valley community members and MacArthur “Geniuses,” Tony Award Winners and nominees, Pulitzer Prize Finalists, Guggenheim Fellows, Obie Award Winners, and Drama Desk Winners.
