Idaho’s Opioid Epidemic – Causes and Solutions

The Hailey Public Library will host a talk on “Idaho’s Opioid Epidemic – Causes and Solutions” with South Central Public Health education specialist Eli Thompson on Thursday, October 12 from 5:30-7:00 PM at Town Center West. The free talk will help participants understand the current state of the opioid epidemic from a national, state, and local level. Overdose Rescue Kits containing naloxone which reverses an opioid overdose will be available.

Cultura – Cali, Columbia

The Hailey Public Library’s Cultura series concludes with a visit to Cali, the second largest city in Colombia, known as the “Rumba Capital” of the world. Los Angeles violinista and educator Mauricio Molino will share personal stories, images, and conversation about his home country, and play the violin. The presentation will be held Sunday, October 8, 2;00-4:00 PM at Town Center West.

The Hailey Public Library’s Cultura series continues with a visit to Arequipa, Peru, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with Visit Sun Valley's Jessica Maynard on Thursday, September 28 from 5:30-7:00 PM. Cultura celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month, inviting community leaders to share personal stories, images, and conversation about their home countries. The free presentation will be held at Town Center West.

Cultura – Oaxaca, Mexico

To help celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, the Hailey Public Library will host Cultura, a series inviting community leaders to share personal stories, images, and conversation about their home countries. On Thursday, September 21 at 5:30-7:00 PM, Dirce Flores, a former professional dancer from a small town near Oaxaca, will introduce us to her area’s regions, multiple ethnic groups, pre-Hispanic ceremonial centers and the Guelaguetza, an annual indigenous cultural celebration. She will conclude by demonstrating a traditional dance.

Muralist John Zender Estrada – Exhibit & Talk!

The Hailey Public Library is delighted to host muralist John Zender Estrada for an art exhibit and free talk on Sunday, September 17, 3:30-6:00 PM at Town Center West. Enjoy colorful, original art work at a meet and greet with this renowned Los Angeles artist followed by a talk by Estrada about his life, work, artistic influences and the power of art to transform and heal. Part of HPL’s Hispanic Heritage Month offerings. Translation services available for non-English speakers.

Hispanic Heritage Month Kickoff!

The Hailey Public Library will host the 4th Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Kickoff on Friday, September 15, 4:00-7:00 PM at Town Center West. Celebrate our community’s rich Hispanic traditions with these family-friendly offerings: music by Quinta Generaćion; food from Taqueria Al Pastor (first 25 meals free!); face painting, tissue paper flowers, games and piñatas for the kids; and bilingual Lotería and prizes with callers Herbert Romero & friends. A bilingual StoryWalk© about a girl of Peruvian and American heritage will be installed at Town Center West, 9/14-10/12.

The Hailey Public Library will host Cultura, a 4-part series celebrating the rich cultural traditions of our Hispanic neighbors. An Hispanic Heritage Month offering, Cultura invites community leaders to share personal stories, images, and conversation about their home countries. On Thursday, September 14, from 5:30-7:00 PM, Salvadoran and community advocate Herbert Romero and dual immersion teacher Edith Lopez Millard will discuss Javier Zamora’s remarkable memoir Solito which describes his illegal migration as a 9-year-old boy from El Salvador to the US to join his parents. Held at Town Center West, 116 S River.

Pick Your Poison: Itchin’ to Know More About Poison Ivy?

The Hailey Public Library’s favorite forensic chemist Cat Helms will discuss how to identify poison ivy which is found in low and mid-elevations throughout Idaho, its history and cultural significance and why some people are affected by touching it and some are not. The free talk will be held at Town Center West, 116 S River, Thursday, August 24, from 5:30-7:00 PM.

Hailey Alley Plant Walk

Our popular alley exploration walk is back. Explore the alleyways of Hailey with members of the Wood River Chapter of the Idaho Native Plant Society. You may be surprised at the variety of plants we will see. We can talk about garden escapees, invasive plants, Idaho natives, trees and more. This “hike” will be around a mile but the terrain can be a little uneven. Allow 2 hours. Meet outside Town Center West (River X Croy Sts) at 6:15pm MT, ready for head out walking at 6:30pm.

Event Series HPL Launches Lotería Night!

HPL Launches Lotería Night!

Hailey Public Library and Neighbors Helping Neighbors are launching Lotería Night, a new monthly, bilingual community night, held on the 4th Thursday of each month from 6:00-8:00 PM starting May 25. Lotería is a traditional game of chance, sometimes referred to as Mexican bingo, and played with a deck of 54 colorful cards. The free, family friendly event will be held at Town Center West and feature door prizes and aperitivos.

A Slide Tour of the Universe

Hailey Public Library will host “A Slide Tour of the Universe” with the Central Idaho Dark Sky Alliance 2023 Astronomer in Residence Dr. Joel Weisberg on Thursday, July 27, from 5:30-7:00 PM. Journey from our Earth to the farthest reaches of the universe, stopping along the way to view various beautiful astronomical images and to learn about these fascinating objects. The talk is co-sponsored by CIDSR and Boise State University Physics Department. It will be held at Town Center West and live streamed.
