For the 4th year, SVMoA is hosting a free community celebration for Día de los Muertos. Celebrated throughout the Americas and Mexico, altars are built to honor and remember loved ones who have died. The Museum has invited local non-profits and community members to build altars in the Community Room of the Hunger Coalition. The event will also feature Mariachi Tleyotltzin from Nampa will play in the greenhouse, the Museum’s Folkloric Dancers will perform and there will be pan de muerto and Mexican hot chocolate, too!

The Hailey Public Library will host the 4th Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Kickoff on Friday, September 15, 4:00-7:00 PM at Town Center West. Celebrate our community’s rich Hispanic traditions with these family-friendly offerings: music by Quinta Generaćion; food from Taqueria Al Pastor (first 25 meals free!); face painting, tissue paper flowers, games and piñatas for the kids; and bilingual Lotería and prizes with callers Herbert Romero & friends. A bilingual StoryWalk© about a girl of Peruvian and American heritage will be installed at Town Center West, 9/14-10/12.

Practically everything that Amy Mattias does, from her job to her hobbies, revolves around locally grown food. The newly appointed Executive Director for the non-profit Sun Valley Institute for Resilience has been with the organization for five years and before that worked for Nourish Me, Lava Lake Lamb, Idaho’s Bounty, the Wood River Sustainability Center, and Kray’s Market. As the ED of the Sun Valley Institute for Resilience, Mattias manages three programs that the institute is the overarching body of: the Impact Idaho Fund, which invests in locally rooted ideas and entrepreneurs; the Local Food Alliance, which raises awareness of the local food system and puts out the Wood River Valley Locally Grown Guide, which lists all the farms, ranchers, restaurants, retail stores, and farmers’ markets that source local food; and 5B Resilient, a program about empowering everyday climate action at the individual and household level. We celebrate national Earth Day with a fun-filled day of events focused on solutions we all can take to slow global warming. Inside and outside at Hailey Town Center West, we have individuals and groups bringing in games, the Boise State Dark Sky Planetarium, food, raffles, composting, tool sharpening, landscaping tips, electric bikes and a riding etiquette and safety challenge for all electric alternatives and much, much more. At 10:00AM, we will also be hosting an Earth Day 5K Road Race/ Fun Run starting and ending at Town Center West. The whole course will be on neighborhood streets this year due to expected river flooding and wet trails. Adults $20. Students $10. Bring a friend! Bring the whole family! Trophies for 1st, 2nd and 3rd, women’s and men’s awarded at 10:45! Dogs are welcome (on leash only).
