The Wood River is Not Your Typical YMCA

It’s Fun to Visit Our YMCA!

Much like everything else in our small mountain town, our local YMCA is not your average gym; it’s not even an average YMCA where typically concrete abounds and people are looking to get in and get out rather than stay a day. The Wood River YMCA is so much more than just a gym, it’s a community center, an activity hub, and a truly integral part of life in the Valley. Whether it’s working out and doing group classes, catching free screenings of movies, giving kids an area for after-school, or learning new gardening skills, the YMCA offers more than just dumbbells and yoga mats.

What They Offer

Opened in late 2007, the YMCA has been offering family-friendly workouts, equipment and more for over 10 years in the Valley. The gym itself is open Monday through Friday from 6am-8pm, Saturdays 7am-6pm, and Sundays 10am-6pm. During that time, access to the upstairs gym is always available where you’ll find a mix of cardio machines including elliptical, treadmill, stair master, erg machine, and stationary bikes. Strength training machines are set up for easy transitioning between sets and there is a dedicated space for free weights and benches. Yoga mats and other stretching tools are available next to mat areas.

Classes

Perhaps most enticing of the gym’s perks are the many classes held daily (for each day’s schedule, check the YMCA website at woodriverymca.org or download their app). Yoga classes range in difficulty and style from vinyasa to slow flow to prenatal yoga. Try a TRX class or barre buns or any number of seasonal classes offered to get you in shape for the next season’s sports.

An area of the gym is dedicated to spin classes and a pilates studio complete with a pilates reformer. Group classes also take place in the indoor lap pool adjacent to a children’s pool complete with a lazy river and a water slide and hot tub.

Climbing

For those interested in climbing, the Y boasts a state-of-the-art indoor rock wall along with a bouldering gym, moonboard, campus boards, and hangboards. Shoe and harness rentals are available as are children’s climbing programs and belay instruction.

Pool

The newly remodeled locker rooms have free lockers for use, showers, and a steam room and provide direct access to the pool.

The Y has numerous youth and family programs including child watch for those parents wanting to workout solo, an after-school program from 2:30-6pm, varying activity camps depending on time of year, educational opportunities like Super Sitter and Power Scholars, and time in Bonni’s Garden, a state-of-the-art, solar-powered greenhouse when people of all ages learn to connect to nature and life.

Pricing

The YMCA offers a variety of membership and pass options. Day, week, and month-long passes are available in varying prices for youth (0-18 years), students, adults (19+), families, and households. Memberships are also available for the same groups which include a joining fee and a monthly fee. Military and corporate memberships are also available. One of the Y’s many reasons they are so cherished in the community is for their policy to never turn anyone away from their facility due to lack of financing. The YMCA Scholarship Fund provides memberships to those who cannot pay and income-based financial assistance is also available.

Membership to the YMCA has many benefits including use of the Y’s facilities, equipment and access to free classes, special member rates for programs and special workshops, six guest passes each year, a free wellness orientation with a fitness coach, daily locker room use, child watch, a bus pass that gets you to and from the Y anywhere in the Valley with Mountain Rides, and facility use of YMCAs in Idaho and nationwide.
