Inspired by Dan Pallotta, whose TED Talk on charity was voted the most persuasive TED talk of all time, Uncharitable is a feature-length documentary that challenges us to rethink traditional philanthropy. It offers a powerful call to end the bare-bones constraints on nonprofits and allow them the freedoms given to business so they can affect real and lasting change. The discussion panel after the film will include: Sally Gillespie, Spur Community Foundation; Jenny Emery Davidson, The Community Library; Melissa Mathews, The Argyros; Brooke Pace McKenna, The Hunger Coalition; and, Jennifer Wells Green, Sun Valley Museum of Art. The film and panel discussion are sure to stimulate conversation! This event is the first in the Giving Thought Learning Series that is part of the “it’s in our nature” campaign to promote the vital role generosity and nonprofits play in our community. The film is co-presented by Spur Community Foundation, SVMoA, and The Argyros, and co-hosted by 16 local nonprofit organizations. This event is free to attend, however, registration is required. Preservation Hall Jazz Band
Preservation Hall Jazz Band’s mission is to preserve the extraordinary music that evolved in New Orleans around the turn of the century and to bring that music to contemporary audiences. Individually, these musicians represent the industry’s elite, and collectively, they keep alive the traditions of this uniquely American sound. Known for their high energy, crowd-pleasing performances, Preservation Hall Jazz Band has been described by music critics as “the best jazz band in the land.” The Argyros is thrilled to partner with our friends from “Pres Hall” for a unique three night musical journey, the likes of which you’d be hard pressed to find in New Orleans, New York, or anywhere else. The band will play three entirely different shows, and each night the Tierney Theater will be transformed to match the feel of that show’s musical mood. Night one will be a traditional seated concert, featuring many of the beloved Big Easy jazz standards that have made Preservation Hall and the “N’awlins Sound” famous around the world. On night two, the Tierney Theater will be converted into a cabaret-style jazz nightclub, and the song selection will match that more intimate setting. Finally, night three will be a red-hot jazz dance …
BODYTRAFFIC
BODYTRAFFIC returns to the Argyros with an all new program including the Sun Valley premiere of I Forgot The Start by acclaimed choreographer Matthew Neenan. This inspired piece was created while in residency at The Argyros last summer. “Neenan dives into such complexities with utter sincerity, then adds touches of whimsy that cohere into a resonant work…I Forgot The Start [includes] songs by Sinéad O’Connor, Ozzie Kotani and Daniel Ho, and Sufjan Stevens that—like the dance itself—convey a sensory meditation on disconnection, connection, and perseverance.” Melissa Strong, Broad Street Review Additional repertory includes The Act Of Becoming, an energetic homage to Maurice Ravel’s iconic Boléro by Fernando Hernando Magadan, and Bloquea’o by BODYTRAFFIC’s own Joan Rodriguez, with original music by Pedro Osuna that blends traditional Cuban rhythms and live percussion accompaniment by Ricky Matute.

What We’re Made Of: Sun Valley Pride
For several years now, Sun Valley Pride has joined the ranks of other meaningful Sun Valley events produced by and for locals, all in the name of providing community. In this case, that community is the LGBTQIA+ community, for which Sun Valley Pride provides a multi-day event full of performers, music, and fun. From what was once a modest singular event to now a full week of both paid and free activities, Sun Valley Pride draws attendees and performers from across the nation. How It Started What is now an entire week of Pride events started as just one: Pride in the Garden, at the nonprofit Sawtooth Botanical Garden (SBG). Executive Director Jen Smith had only been in her role for a few years when she suggested the Garden do a Pride event as a way to raise funds. As she says, they didn’t need to do another golf tournament or poker run like other organizations in the area had done as fundraisers. The board went wild, and the first Pride in the Garden event was held in 2021, which Jen describes as “a social justice event trying to bring awareness to the LGBTQIA+ community and its allies and to …
