Bilingual Workshop: Mexican Piñata Classical Handcrafting

Join professional piñata maker Carlos Lecanda as he leads a bilingual class in the classical Mexican tradition of piñata making. Based in Mexico, Lecanda will demonstrate the handcrafting of two different types of piñatas, and guide students as they make their own to take home. Students will learn to make paper flowers to decorate their piñatas. Lecanda will also share the cultural history of the piñata in Mexico. $10, walk-ups welcomed day of workshop! CREATIVE JUMP-IN: Introduction to Astrophotography

Astrophotography, also known as astronomical imaging, is photography or imaging of astronomical objects, celestial events, and areas of the night sky. Learn how to create stunning images of the landscape under a night sky in the dramatic Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve! This class will introduce participants to pre-trip planning, camera settings and ideal equipment, composition, panorama creation, and post-processing techniques. Participants will meet at the Sun Valley Museum of Art on Friday, Oct 1 at 5:30pm, arrange for carpooling as needed and depart for Little Redfish Lake by 5:45pm. Students will photograph the sunset (7:20pm), discuss camera settings and composition and shoot a bit of blue hour before astronomical twilight. Once a fully dark sky is in place, participants will practice creating night sky compositions before heading back to Ketchum around 10:30pm. If the sky is cloudy, alternate arrangements will be made to meet on this side of Galena Summit (location to be determined). On Saturday, students will discuss post-processing technique, including light noise reduction, panorama stitching, lens corrections, and image retouching. Age and ability: 18 yrs and older, beginners welcome! CREATIVE JUMP-IN: “Building Layers with Oil and Cold Wax“ with Stacie Phillips

In this workshop, students will explore the basics of mixed media with oil using Williamsburg Handmade Oil Paint, cold wax, powdered pigments and other materials. Participants will create abstract layers through textures, line and colored fields that they can then mine through the development of their own mark making. This rich medium helps generate a space for the artist to create intentional layers and discover unintentional layers of abstraction. In this workshop, students will explore technique, discuss concept and composition, and also reserve time to work. While some painting experience is preferred, the workshop is open to all levels. SPECIAL EVENT: Bilingual Community Printmaking Workshops (Session 1) with Artist Christie Tirado

Join printmaker Christie Tirado for a family-friendly printmaking workshop. Participants will make a portrait of a person who has been essential in their lives during the pandemic—a friend, a family member or someone else from the community. Each participant will make at least 2 impressions of their print—one to take with them, one for inclusion in SVMoA’s spring 2022 exhibition, Printmaking, Persuasion and the Mexican Graphic Tradition. Tirado will lead the workshop in Spanish and English, guiding participants as they work with Styrofoam plates to make their prints. A graduate of the University of Washington, Christie Tirado is an artist and educator based in the Yakima Valley. Her work has been exhibited at galleries across the Pacific Northwest, including, most recently, at Davidson Galleries in Seattle. As a printmaker, Tirado, who is Mexican-American, is inspired by Mexico’s long tradition of graphic workshops. Place your name on the wait list: HERE Sun Valley Museum of Art (SVMoA) is pleased to present “Capturing Your Best iPhone Photos,” a two-session Craft Series Workshop with photography enthusiast Stacie Brew. The workshop will be held on two successive Tuesday evenings, July 27 and Aug. 3, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in SVMoA’s Hailey Classroom. The workshop is part of SVMoA’s current exhibition, “Clay, Silver, Ink: Sun Valley Center at 50.” The Museum’s 2020–2021 Craft Series Workshops are generously supported by Heather Horton and Deida Runswick. Photography is often referred to as painting with light. Like practitioners of any artistic discipline, photographers should be adept at using all the tools in their artistic toolboxes, always ready to capture light artistically. Local photographer Stacie Brew will walk workshop participants through the basics of how to take great photos with an iPhone. Smart Art – Fall 2021 After-School Youth Program

Smart Art, a weekly afternoon of activities and care for students in grades 4 & 5, offers opportunities to explore a variety of art forms, engaging students through creative problem solving, self-expression and confidence building. SVMoA will be offering after-school care and activities one day a week, either Tuesday or Wednesday, from 2:30–5:30pm. Fall 2021 Smart Art!
