SWEENEY TODD: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
Book by Hugh Wheeler
APRIL 21–MAY 1
Directed by NATALIE BATTISTONE
Music Directed by GRANT CAREY
SWEENEY TODD is widely considered the pinnacle of the late Stephen Sondheim’s work (1930-2021.) The Spot is proud to honor his memory in bringing his beloved “dark operetta” to our space.
SWEENEY TODD is a story of love and revenge.
Benjamin Barker, an unjustly exiled barber, returns to London after years of imprisonment to find the Judge who framed him has ravaged his young wife and stolen their child. In his grief Barker renounces his identity and becomes the infamous, Sweeney Todd. With the help of Mrs. Lovett, the resourceful proprietress of a failing pie shop beneath his former apartment, Todd reinstates himself as a barber. Mrs. Lovett’s luck sharply shifts when Todd’s thirst for blood inspires the integration of an ingredient into her meat pies that has the people of London lining up… The Spot’s chilling production features a small ensemble and new orchestrations of Sondheim’s darkly brilliant score.
Recommended for audiences 12+ due to violence and mature themes.
