In this workshop, students will explore the basics of mixed media with oil using Williamsburg Handmade Oil Paint, cold wax, powdered pigments and other materials. Participants will create abstract layers through textures, line and colored fields that they can then mine through the development of their own mark making. This rich medium helps generate a space for the artist to create intentional layers and discover unintentional layers of abstraction. In this workshop, students will explore technique, discuss concept and composition, and also reserve time to work. While some painting experience is preferred, the workshop is open to all levels. Students will create multiple works on paper and wood panels.

Age 18 and older, beginners welcome!

Stacy Phillips was born in Northern California and then moved with her family across the United States for the next 20 years. She landed in Utah after studying fine art in the Northeast. After graduating with a fine arts and business degree from Keene State College, Stacy owned and operated the Flat Rabbit Gallery in Park City, Utah, for nine years. Since selling the gallery to pursue her own studio practice in 1993, she has been a full-time working artist. Represented across the country, she has had several solo and group gallery exhibitions in New York, Utah, and California. Stacy currently lives in Salt Lake City and is the Working Artist of Utah for Golden Paints. Stacy is presently an assistant coach on the Art2Life Creative Visionary Program for Nicholas Wilton. She maintains a studio at the Poor Yorick Studios in South Salt Lake.

“I am excited to have Stacy, who is so knowledgeable about oil paints and the cold-wax painting technique, come teach a class with us,” said Jeanne Knott, Visual Arts Class Assistant at SVMoA.

SVMoA currently requires all participants, staff and volunteers to wear face masks at The Museum and at all indoor SVMoA events regardless of vaccination status. While attending our events, all participants must follow all posted or spoken instructions regarding health and safety.
