BEN STEELE: “Beg, Borrow & Steele”
Friesen+Lantz announces the final exhibition of our inaugural 2022 season: “Beg, Borrow & Steele” which features whimsical new work from acclaimed contemporary artist Ben Steele. With an education built upon classical training, Steele utilizes the processes of the old masters with a contemporary sensibility; never staying in one place for too long. The result is a clever, wide-ranging body of work – from still life to portrait to landscape (and often somewhere in between) – melding art history and pop culture references in his ever-changing process.
“Building this exhibition was a diverse experience, from dabbling in sculptural work to developing a multi-piece interpretation of Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup through the lenses of some of my favorite artists and art styles,” says Steele.
“Getting to study and emulate the style and craft of these images throughout my career has brought me immense purpose. And I think that getting to recontextualize these works – as other artists have done before me – allows for them to continue to exist in other forms. Otherwise, they could disappear quietly into an Oligarchs private collection or are only available to those who can visit them in the Louvre. I hope that this exhibition is truly an example of begging and borrowing, but mostly Steeleing.”
For this show, the artist is gravitating towards the amusing and the classical, with a focus on enjoyment and entertainment for the audience. “Art at its best should be a chance to momentarily escape and refresh ourselves,” he says. And what better place than in Sun Valley, where the days are so often free of the clouds.”
Steele’s newest exhibition opens December 30th and will coincide with SVGA’s final Gallery Walk of the year. Stop by Friesen+Lantz to enjoy a DJ set from Funkhauzen, complimentary wine and beer, as well as on opportunity to meet Steele in person. For more information please visit our website at
