Featuring David Janseki, Nick Sacks & Aly Wepplo
At a bus stop in a run-down New Jersey town, Darja, a Polish immigrant cleaning lady, is done talking about feelings; it’s time to talk money. Over the course of 22 years, three relationships, and three presidencies, Darja negotiates for her future with men who can offer her love or security, but never both. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Martyna Majok’s IRONBOUND is a darkly funny, heartbreaking portrait of a woman for whom love is a luxury—and a liability—as she fights to survive in America. The reading is directed by MacArthur “Genius Grant” Fellow and Idaho-native Samuel D. Hunter (THE WHALE; A CASE FOR THE EXISTENCE OF GOD).
Majok is Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency’s 2022-2023 playwright. This reading of IRONBOUND is part of SVPR’s events to kick off Majok’s year-long engagement. During 2022-2023, she will be offered substantive time, space, and resources to write a new work for the stage. Part of her residency will include writing time at the historic Ernest and Mary Hemingway House in Ketchum, which is managed by The Community Library Association as a private residence for visiting writers and the site of ongoing preservation efforts.
