Salmon Club is a wild salmon and steelhead advocacy group based in the Wood River Valley and Boise. During bi-monthly meetings, volunteers spend their time creatively mobilizing efforts to bring Idaho’s wild salmon and steelhead home. During the Wood River Valley’s April meeting, activists will take part in a postcard-writing campaign directed at Washington state decision-makers. This hour of activism will help you learn more about the issues salmon are facing, connect with other activists, and be a part of a united movement to correct the wrongs of history. Official Orienteering Control markers will be placed out on/off Greenhorn trails. Once a marker is found (using either GPS coordinates or a map), participants will punch their cards as “proof” they’ve been there. Compasses not needed. Time limited. Volcanoes and massive underground reservoirs of magma created many of the rocks in the Wood River area. Join Dr. Paul Link of Idaho State University for a morning lecture and afternoon roadside field trip where you’ll explore these dramatic episodes and see their remains. Dr. Link will also delve into forces that gripped the region’s rocks and shaped them into the beautiful mountain landscapes we enjoy today. This full-day class is limited to 20 students. Lost River Disco takes place 29 miles from Ketchum, Idaho, at Idaho Basecamp’s eco-retreat along the Big Lost River. Surrounded by mountains, trees and the river, enjoy live music with a focus on house and techno DJs from across the U.S., along with other visual artists and performers. Experience different health and wellness vendors, such as massage, sound baths, yoga, and more. Or, sip on a craft cocktail while laying in the sun, float the lazy river, or watch live artists paint! All of this takes place at Idaho Basecamp, a non-profit organization and a leading resource for outdoor adventure education in Idaho. Celebrate Hailey! The 27th Annual Garden Tour features seven hand-picked and outstanding landscapes in and around Hailey. Garden Tour booklets will be available the first week of May 2022 in the community at Visitor Centers in Hailey and Ketchum, and at garden centers and bookstores throughout the valley – plan your route now! The booklet contains ALL the information you need to know, including a map, descriptions of the gardens, information about the Sawtooth Botanical Garden, and much, much more. Tickets will be available SOON. SBG members $35, non-members $40 (prices increase by $5 per entry two days prior to the Tour). When you purchase “tickets” your name will be added to an entry roster that will be at each of the seven showcased properties (consult the booklet for map) at the welcome table. The roster is updated live and is also available at the Sawtooth Botanical Garden. Your entry “ticket” this year is again a colorful bandanna. Diane Raptosh’s “Hand Signs from Eternity’s Yurt” explores civic unease in a series of 22 American sonnets—unrhymed 14-lined poems. Characterized by a sense of informed resistance and revolutionary compassion, the poems seek a “conscious recoupling of feeling / with thought” in the hopes that empathy might birth a new strain of democracy. Join us as Raptosh discusses the joys of reading and writing poetry and the role of the imagination in an imperiled democracy. She will discuss poetry as one of our most underused resources for reimagining self and society. She’ll share some of her most recent work with us and will invite your questions. A book signing will follow. This event will be held outdoors on the Library’s Donaldson Robb Family Lawn on 4th Street. No registration is required. Bring your chair or blanket! Martyna Majok, the 2022 Sun Valley Playwrights’ Resident, will read the opening monologue from her Pulitzer Prize-winning play, “Cost of Living,” and discuss her work and writing process. The play, on Broadway this fall, deftly challenges the typical perceptions of those living with disabilities and delves deep into the ways class, race, nationality, and wealth can create gulfs between people, even as they long for the ability to connect. A light reception will follow. Registration recommended. Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency (SVPR) is a non-profit artist retreat, commissioning program, and new play development lab based in Idaho. The mission of SVPR is to galvanize positive change within Wood River Valley’s community and beyond by giving visionary theatre artists of all backgrounds substantive time and space to focus on creating new work for the stage that produces conversations and learning opportunities locally, regionally, and nationally. Annually, SVPR provides one playwright a $10,000 commission, 13 months of individually-tailored development resources, and two months of retreat time in Ketchum, in partnership with The Community Library and The Argyros.

You don’t have to be as crazy as some of Shakespeare’s characters in Hamlet to feel that keying out plants can be a maddening experience. In this beginner’s look at keying, Lisa Horton will tease our curiosity with a painless activity introducing the dichotomous plant key. We’ll talk about how and why plants got their names, learn a little terminology and then plunge into keying out some plants to genus level. You’ll leave having had some fun and learned a little bit. Lisa Horton holds a M.S. in Plant Anatomy and is one of the usual suspects leading our Wood River Chapter plant walks. She has also made a number of wildflower videos for Eye on Sun Valley.
