6:00 pm
Join The Community Library for a virtual conversation with Hailey-based author, Sarah Sentilles, about her new book, “Stranger Care: A Memoir of Loving What Isn’t Ours,” the moving story of what one woman learned from fostering a newborn—about injustice, about making mistakes, about how to better love and protect people beyond our immediate kin. The book releases May 4, 2021, from Random House. Sentilles will share readings from the new book during this conversation with the Library’s executive director, Jenny Emery Davidson. Watch at www.livestream.com/comlib Sarah Sentilles is a writer, teacher, critical theorist, scholar of religion, and author of many books, including Draw Your Weapons, which won the 2018 PEN Award for Creative Nonfiction. “Brood” with Jackie Polzin @ The Community Library
6:00 pm
Join us for a conversation with Jackie Polzin, author of the new novel, “Brood.” Polzin is being hailed as an exquisite new literary voice–wryly funny, nakedly honest, beautifully observational, in the vein of Jenny Offill and Elizabeth Strout. Over the course of a single year, our nameless narrator heroically tries to keep her small brood of four chickens alive despite the seemingly endless challenges that caring for another creature entails. From the forty-below nights of a brutal Minnesota winter to a sweltering summer which brings a surprise tornado, she battles predators, bad luck, and the uncertainty of a future that may not look anything like the one she always imagined. Intimate and startlingly original, this slender novel is filled with wisdom, sorrow and joy. A stunning and brilliantly insightful meditation on life and longing. Polzin will be in conversation with Martha Williams, the Library’s programs and education manager. Jackie Polzin lives in St. Paul, Minnesota with her husband and children. She is a graduate of the Boise State MFA program. Brood is her first novel.

“A Christmas Carol in the Library” – A Staged Reading @ The Community Library
6:00 pm
It’s after hours in the library on Christmas Eve, with only the cheerful Miss Trilling and the grumpy Mr. Heaps left to shelve the final books and turn out the lights. The two librarians find themselves immersed in retelling Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Aided only by the usual trappings of a library, Miss Trilling and Mr. Heaps take on more than thirty characters and bring the classic tale of miserliness and redemptive generosity to life inside our very own Community Library. Join The Community Library for this staged reading, which celebrates the power and wonder of imaginative reading together. Directed by David Janeski and read by Aly Wepplo and Matthew Gorby. Appropriate for ages 5 and up. The staged reading runs for approximately 60 minutes. Two performances: Friday, December 10 at 6:00 p.m., and Saturday, December 11 at 3:00 p.m. Space is limited, so register at www.comlib.org to join us. Proof of vaccination is required to attend in person at the Library, and both performances will also be live streamed on the Library’s Vimeo.

ONE OF THE MOST ANTICIPATED BOOKS OF 2022—Good Housekeeping, Autostraddle, The Millions “When the Juvenile Transportation Services come for you in the night in a preordained kidnapping, complete with an unmarked van and husky guardsmen you can’t outmatch, you have been sold for a promise.” A young woman thinks she has escaped her past only to discover that she’s been hovering on its edges all along: She and her younger sister bide their time in a dilapidated warehouse in a desolate town north of New York City; their parents settled there with dreams of starting an art commune. But after the girls’ father vanishes, all traces of stability disappear for the family, and the girls retreat into strange worlds of their own mythmaking and isolation. As the sisters both try ...

Sun Valley Single Fly @ Ketchum Town Square, Forest Service Park, & Big Wood River
3:00 pm
The Sun Valley Single Fly (Single Fly) is a unique fly fishing competition where the rules are simple. Anglers (or their team) pick a single fly to fish with for a two-hour window. Once your fly is gone – you’re done. Scoring is based on the number of fish caught with bonus points for length. Single Fly anglers will fish the Big Wood River, one of Idaho’s famous Blue Ribbon Trout Streams. The Wood, as locals affectionately know it, runs from North to South throughout the entire Wood River Valley and is a dream for beginners and experts alike. The most intriguing part of the event is its singular fly rule. For anglers selecting their single fly could make or break their day on the river. The Fly Crawl is a route of local outfitters, guides, and shops that will offer refreshments and local expertise on what the fish are biting on. On July 29th, after Registration and the Fly Crawl, participants are invited to join veteran anglers and tune up their knot-tying skills in Town Square at the Nosh and Knots table. Fishing on the Big Wood River begins on Saturday, July 30th, in the morning. In the afternoon, ...

Poetry Reading with Diane Raptosh @ The Community Library
5:00 pm
Diane Raptosh’s “Hand Signs from Eternity’s Yurt” explores civic unease in a series of 22 American sonnets—unrhymed 14-lined poems. Characterized by a sense of informed resistance and revolutionary compassion, the poems seek a “conscious recoupling of feeling / with thought” in the hopes that empathy might birth a new strain of democracy. Join us as Raptosh discusses the joys of reading and writing poetry and the role of the imagination in an imperiled democracy. She will discuss poetry as one of our most underused resources for reimagining self and society. She’ll share some of her most recent work with us and will invite your questions. A book signing will follow. This event will be held outdoors on the Library’s Donaldson Robb Family Lawn on 4th Street. No registration is required. Bring your chair or blanket! (In case of inclement weather, the event will move indoors to the Lecture Hall.) Diane Raptosh’s :American Amnesiac” (Etruscan Press), was longlisted for the 2013 National Book Award in poetry. A native Idahoan and the recipient of three fellowships in literature from the Idaho Commission on the Arts, she served as the Boise Poet Laureate (2013) as well as the Idaho Writer-in-Residence (2013-2016). A Conversation with Martyna Majok, 2022 Sun Valley Playwrights' Resident @ The Community Library
6:00 pm
Martyna Majok, the 2022 Sun Valley Playwrights’ Resident, will read the opening monologue from her Pulitzer Prize-winning play, “Cost of Living,” and discuss her work and writing process. The play, on Broadway this fall, deftly challenges the typical perceptions of those living with disabilities and delves deep into the ways class, race, nationality, and wealth can create gulfs between people, even as they long for the ability to connect. A light reception will follow. Registration recommended. Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency (SVPR) is a non-profit artist retreat, commissioning program, and new play development lab based in Idaho. The mission of SVPR is to galvanize positive change within Wood River Valley’s community and beyond by giving visionary theatre artists of all backgrounds substantive time and space to focus on creating new work for the stage that produces conversations and learning opportunities locally, regionally, and nationally. Annually, SVPR provides one playwright a $10,000 commission, 13 months of individually-tailored development resources, and two months of retreat time in Ketchum, in partnership with The Community Library and The Argyros.
