“Why Photography?” is an ode to our passion for photography and the wide range of techniques and styles this medium allows. One of the greatest powers of photography is the ability for an image to give the viewer a new perspective on how we see, and experience life. Fine art photography has continued to evolve technically and visually since its inception in the 1830s, and our artists in this exhibition demonstrate the vast scope of this art form. From the iconic fashion imagery of Melvin Sokolsky, and the intimate still-lifes of Jefferson Hayman to Laurie Victor Kay’s large-scale digitally altered landscapes and Charles Kay Jr’s lenticular photographs that let you travel to multiple cities at once, this exhibition explores how photography can transport you to new places. Fine art photography is something we have enjoyed sharing with our patrons since first opening the gallery and our passion for collecting the medium has not diminished. The visual escape this medium provides has only amplified our love and our desire to share it.

Join The Community Library for a virtual conversation with Hailey-based author, Sarah Sentilles, about her new book, “Stranger Care: A Memoir of Loving What Isn’t Ours,” the moving story of what one woman learned from fostering a newborn—about injustice, about making mistakes, about how to better love and protect people beyond our immediate kin. The book releases May 4, 2021, from Random House. Sentilles will share readings from the new book during this conversation with the Library’s executive director, Jenny Emery Davidson. She’s had residencies at Hedgebrook and Yaddo. She earned a bachelor’s degree at Yale and master’s and doctoral degrees at Harvard. She is the co-founder of the Alliance of Idaho, which works to protect the basic human rights of immigrants by engaging in education, outreach, and advocacy at local, state, and national levels.

Join us for a conversation with Jackie Polzin, author of the new novel, “Brood.” Polzin is being hailed as an exquisite new literary voice–wryly funny, nakedly honest, beautifully observational, in the vein of Jenny Offill and Elizabeth Strout. Over the course of a single year, our nameless narrator heroically tries to keep her small brood of four chickens alive despite the seemingly endless challenges that caring for another creature entails. From the forty-below nights of a brutal Minnesota winter to a sweltering summer which brings a surprise tornado, she battles predators, bad luck, and the uncertainty of a future that may not look anything like the one she always imagined. Intimate and startlingly original, this slender novel is filled with wisdom, sorrow and joy. A stunning and brilliantly insightful meditation on life and longing. Polzin will be in conversation with Martha Williams, the Library’s programs and education manager. Jackie Polzin lives in St. Paul, Minnesota with her husband and children. She is a graduate of the Boise State MFA program. Brood is her first novel.

Gilman Contemporary presents “It was all a Dream” a group exhibition exploring dreamy, romantic photographs from a selection of gallery artists. This exhibition will showcase photographers whose work elicits a sense of amorous adventure or fanciful idealism. Jason Langer’s cinematic black and white photographs of urban life hint at the secrets that exist in the city at night. Devoted to shooting on film, Langer embraces the noir quality of film, creating work that looks as if it was taken in the past. He takes us down moonlit streets, under lamplights, through canyons of the city, into a backlit window where we may see a glimpse of a late-night rendezvous. Langer’s work reveals the atmosphere of a city at night, revealing the secrets one may find there. Before becoming a photographer, Rodney Smith studied Theology at Yale to better understand “what it is like to be human.” Smith’s unique understanding of the human condition allowed him to compose photographs that speak to our internal longing for beauty, tenderness, and levity. The Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency welcomes for its first resident: Obie Award-winning playwright David Cale. To kick off his residency, the Library is hosting an outdoor reception to welcome David to Ketchum and to invite the community to view his photography exhibition, “The Smiling Squirrels of Tompkins Square Park.” The exhibit features more than a dozen images taken by Cale near his home in Manhattan. There will also be a Q&A with David about his work, exhibit, and residency project beginning around 5:15 p.m. Artist Statement: “Shortly after the pandemic began, and we were in a largely stay at home situation, I started to take the short walk from my apartment to Tompkins Square Park, just to get some air. The first time I did this a very bold squirrel approached me. As I eat a lot of almonds, I thought, I wonder if I can take some almonds and feed the squirrels? This became an almost daily ritual, and soon the squirrels became trusting of me, and quite tame. I began to name them and write little stories about them that I posted on Facebook. “A Christmas Carol in the Library” – A Staged Reading

It’s after hours in the library on Christmas Eve, with only the cheerful Miss Trilling and the grumpy Mr. Heaps left to shelve the final books and turn out the lights. The two librarians find themselves immersed in retelling Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Aided only by the usual trappings of a library, Miss Trilling and Mr. Heaps take on more than thirty characters and bring the classic tale of miserliness and redemptive generosity to life inside our very own Community Library. Join The Community Library for this staged reading, which celebrates the power and wonder of imaginative reading together. Directed by David Janeski and read by Aly Wepplo and Matthew Gorby. Appropriate for ages 5 and up. The staged reading runs for approximately 60 minutes. But when his intellectually disabled younger brother Mickey, who’s entire vocabulary has been limited to “oh boy” and “wow”, suddenly spouts the word “Greetings!” the entire family’s belief system is turned upside down. Written by Tom Dudzick and Directed by Tess Makena, this in-person performance mixes large-scale production elements with the intimate style of a professional reading – resulting in a spectacular, thought-provoking, and hilarious holiday experience made to enchant anyone from anywhere.

This December Gilman Contemporary will exhibit “Seizing Beauty” featuring photographer Paulette Tavormina’s carefully crafted tableaus informed and inspired by 17th century painting. Often using a rich, dark backdrop and subtle lighting, Tavormina captures the depth and nuance of these paintings in her photographs. Drawing on her personal experience as well as an understanding of art history, the artist’s hand is present throughout the compositions. Sourcing from farmer’s markets around New York City, Tavormina must shoot within the constraints of the seasons. Her images hold an understanding of time – the flowers, food, and creatures have a finite expiration. Originally taking inspiration from the work of 17th century masters of still life, such as Giovanna Garzoni Francisco de Zurbarán, Adriaen Coorte and Maria Sibylla Merian, Tavormina has created work that continues upon the tradition of the still-life as an artform. Each of her photographs is carefully crafted and is the result of careful consideration of light and placement. The directness of Paulette’s work exposes the connection between humans, nature, and time. Tavormina was awarded the Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant in 2016. Laurie Victor Kay’s vibrant photographic compositions of trees and urban scenes will be featured in Kay’s fifth solo exhibition at Gilman Contemporary. Through her lyrical photographic constructs, seamless arrangements play with our sense of perspective and give new life to familiar landscapes. Her arboreal images show branches, trunks, and leaves splitting and rejoining to create a new narrative that is no longer natural, but more phycological. She injects hyper hues and rewrites these images with her unique visual language. Metro scenes and ornate interiors are further manipulated with an almost mathematical perfectionism allowing her to construct energized and idealized spaces. It is no surprise that Laurie was once a painter, each photographic work is reimagined until they provoke a sense of exploration and abandonment. Laurie Victor Kay’s works are in numerous private collections throughout the United States. Laurie owns Laurie and Charles Photographs in Omaha, Nebraska. Her commercial clients include the Tiger Woods Foundation, Nike, Proctor and Gamble, AT&T, the New York Times, Condé Nast Traveler, and Travel and Leisure, among many others.

Diane Raptosh’s “Hand Signs from Eternity’s Yurt” explores civic unease in a series of 22 American sonnets—unrhymed 14-lined poems. Characterized by a sense of informed resistance and revolutionary compassion, the poems seek a “conscious recoupling of feeling / with thought” in the hopes that empathy might birth a new strain of democracy. Join us as Raptosh discusses the joys of reading and writing poetry and the role of the imagination in an imperiled democracy. In these workshops, we will be making offerings out of clay that symbolize our present community, ancestors and future hopes. George will demonstrate how to make small portraits, alebrijes and flowers with wet clay utilizing several building techniques. You will also have the opportunity to decorate a tile to be added to the exterior of the altar. All ages are welcome at this fun creation event. A Conversation with Martyna Majok, 2022 Sun Valley Playwrights’ Resident

Martyna Majok, the 2022 Sun Valley Playwrights’ Resident, will read the opening monologue from her Pulitzer Prize-winning play, “Cost of Living,” and discuss her work and writing process. The play, on Broadway this fall, deftly challenges the typical perceptions of those living with disabilities and delves deep into the ways class, race, nationality, and wealth can create gulfs between people, even as they long for the ability to connect. A light reception will follow. Registration recommended. Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency (SVPR) is a non-profit artist retreat, commissioning program, and new play development lab based in Idaho. The mission of SVPR is to galvanize positive change within Wood River Valley’s community and beyond by giving visionary theatre artists of all backgrounds substantive time and space to focus on creating new work for the stage that produces conversations and learning opportunities locally, regionally, and nationally. Annually, SVPR provides one playwright a $10,000 commission, 13 months of individually-tailored development resources, and two months of retreat time in Ketchum, in partnership with The Community Library and The Argyros.

Zero human activity, the silence of falling snow in one of the most remote places on earth is enchanting and reflective.” -Tuck Fauntleroy Fauntleroy’s focus for his Burn series are wildfire affected regions in Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park. They represent a mixed perspective with some images shot aerially and others shot from the ground. Like much if his other work, the aerial images were captured flying over the territory via small single engine airplanes from an open window for an unobstructed lens. Burn is timely and relevant in the current environment of climate change and the proliferation of recent fires across the western US and globally. The massive 1988 Yellowstone fires were a wake-up-call and significant warning of destruction and foreshadowing of the cost of climate events. Warming, drought, and the resulting fires have never been more dangerous. The photographs are careful compositions of positive and negative space while capturing the elegant lines and shapes created by a natural landscape scared by flame.
