"Don't Say We Didn't Warn You" with Writer-In-Residence Ariel Delgado Dixon @ The Community Library

Hemingway Writer-In-Residence Ariel Delgado Dixon joins us to discuss her debut novel, “Don’t Say We Didn’t Warn You.” Dixon will be joined by Mary Pauline Lowry, a 2020 resident with The Community Library and the Boise-based author of “The Roxy Letters.” Two sisters unite to survive a traumatic upbringing—from absentee parents to a wilderness camp for troubled teens—in this “relentless and spooky” (Joy Williams) debut from an essential new voice. ONE OF THE MOST ANTICIPATED BOOKS OF 2022—Good Housekeeping, Autostraddle, The Millions “When the Juvenile Transportation Services come for you in the night in a preordained kidnapping, complete with an unmarked van and husky guardsmen you can’t outmatch, you have been sold for a promise.” A young woman thinks she has escaped her past only to discover that she’s been hovering on its edges all along: She and her younger sister bide their time in a dilapidated warehouse in a desolate town north of New York City; their parents settled there with dreams of starting an art commune. But after the girls’ father vanishes, all traces of stability disappear for the family, and the girls retreat into strange worlds of their own mythmaking and isolation. As the sisters both try ...

Poetry Reading with Diane Raptosh @ The Community Library
5:00 pm
Diane Raptosh’s “Hand Signs from Eternity’s Yurt” explores civic unease in a series of 22 American sonnets—unrhymed 14-lined poems. Characterized by a sense of informed resistance and revolutionary compassion, the poems seek a “conscious recoupling of feeling / with thought” in the hopes that empathy might birth a new strain of democracy. Join us as Raptosh discusses the joys of reading and writing poetry and the role of the imagination in an imperiled democracy. She will discuss poetry as one of our most underused resources for reimagining self and society. She’ll share some of her most recent work with us and will invite your questions. A book signing will follow. This event will be held outdoors on the Library’s Donaldson Robb Family Lawn on 4th Street. No registration is required. Bring your chair or blanket! (In case of inclement weather, the event will move indoors to the Lecture Hall.) Diane Raptosh’s :American Amnesiac” (Etruscan Press), was longlisted for the 2013 National Book Award in poetry. A native Idahoan and the recipient of three fellowships in literature from the Idaho Commission on the Arts, she served as the Boise Poet Laureate (2013) as well as the Idaho Writer-in-Residence (2013-2016). In 2018 ...

A Conversation with Martyna Majok, 2022 Sun Valley Playwrights' Resident @ The Community Library
6:00 pm
Martyna Majok, the 2022 Sun Valley Playwrights’ Resident, will read the opening monologue from her Pulitzer Prize-winning play, “Cost of Living,” and discuss her work and writing process. The play, on Broadway this fall, deftly challenges the typical perceptions of those living with disabilities and delves deep into the ways class, race, nationality, and wealth can create gulfs between people, even as they long for the ability to connect. A light reception will follow. Registration recommended. Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency (SVPR) is a non-profit artist retreat, commissioning program, and new play development lab based in Idaho. The mission of SVPR is to galvanize positive change within Wood River Valley’s community and beyond by giving visionary theatre artists of all backgrounds substantive time and space to focus on creating new work for the stage that produces conversations and learning opportunities locally, regionally, and nationally. Annually, SVPR provides one playwright a $10,000 commission, 13 months of individually-tailored development resources, and two months of retreat time in Ketchum, in partnership with The Community Library and The Argyros.
Sawtooth Brewery - Ketchum

Wildlife Science Pub @ Sawtooth Brewery - Ketchum | Ketchum | Idaho | United States
6:00 pm
Based on the Science Cafe model developed in Europe in the 1990s, ICL is pleased to present Science Pub as a fun way to bring educators, scientists, presenters, and the public together. Come on out, grab a beer, and hear about our wildlife program with Jeff Abrams, ICL’s new wildlife associate! Idahoans care deeply about the native creatures that call the Gem State home. Historically, conservation efforts have focused almost exclusively on game animals. In recent years, however, science has told us that the threats facing the overwhelming majority of Idaho’s wildlife must be addressed with a much broader conservation management perspective, emphasizing diversity and resiliency. Going forward, habitat concerns and climate change will increasingly be at the center of comprehensive efforts to ensure security for all Idaho’s critters – from woodpeckers and Big-Eared bats to fishers and wolverines. Please join ICL, as we host a conversation about our renewed emphasis on Idaho’s wildlife and emerging ideas about managing all species across the landscape to address the increasing challenges they face. No RSVP or scientific background is required. Just bring your curiosity, sense of humor, and appetite for drinks and knowledge!
