A Conversation with Martyna Majok, 2022 Sun Valley Playwrights' Resident @ The Community Library
6:00 pm
Martyna Majok, the 2022 Sun Valley Playwrights’ Resident, will read the opening monologue from her Pulitzer Prize-winning play, “Cost of Living,” and discuss her work and writing process. The play, on Broadway this fall, deftly challenges the typical perceptions of those living with disabilities and delves deep into the ways class, race, nationality, and wealth can create gulfs between people, even as they long for the ability to connect. A light reception will follow. Registration recommended. Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency (SVPR) is a non-profit artist retreat, commissioning program, and new play development lab based in Idaho. The mission of SVPR is to galvanize positive change within Wood River Valley’s community and beyond by giving visionary theatre artists of all backgrounds substantive time and space to focus on creating new work for the stage that produces conversations and learning opportunities locally, regionally, and nationally. Annually, SVPR provides one playwright a $10,000 commission, 13 months of individually-tailored development resources, and two months of retreat time in Ketchum, in partnership with The Community Library and The Argyros.

Creating the Idaho Women’s Suffrage Commemorative Sculpture @ The Community Library
6:00 pm
Join Idaho State Historical Society’s Executive Director Janet L. Gallimore in a conversation about the journey to create the Idaho Women’s Suffrage Commemorative Sculpture. A legacy of the 2020 “Idaho Women 100: Courageous Past, Unlimited Future” initiative, commemorating the passage of the 19th Amendment and women’s suffrage, this will be the first monument dedicated to women on the Idaho State House grounds. Irene Deely, the respected Idaho sculptor known for her figurative sculptures in bronze, is the project’s artist. Inspired in part by the Idaho State Seal, this woman walks metaphorically in the footsteps of those who came before and then hands off her shoe to the future. The piece will be dedicated in December of 2022. The Idaho Capitol Commission approved the sculpture for placement on the Idaho State Capitol grounds and it will become part of the Idaho State Historical Society’s collections, in the Capitol Collections portfolio. In 1896, Idaho was the 4th state to grant its women suffrage through Idaho Senate Resolution 2. The Idaho Women’s Suffrage Commemorative Sculpture reminds all Idahoans of Idaho’s historic leadership as the 4th state to grant women suffrage and the 30th state to ratify the national women’s suffrage amendment; these were ...

Gilman Contemporary
Jan 1 – Jan 17 all-day
Deck Your Walls @ Gilman Contemporary | Sun Valley | Idaho | United States
12:00 am
Each December Gilman Contemporary celebrates the diversity of the artists they bring to Sun Valley with a dynamic group exhibition. This year the gallery teases future summer exhibitions including Carmen McNall and Mayme Kratz, who will have solo exhibitions in 2023. Also featured in December’s group exhibit are gallery newcomers Matt Duffin and Ghislain Brown-Kossi. Matt Duffin explores the themes of solitude and irony through moody and “neurotically meticulous” encaustic wax paintings. He uses the stark contrast of extreme light and shadow, as well as strong compositional strategies, to enhance his implied narratives creating works that are simultaneously dark and humorous. Ghislain Brown-Kossi’s childhood in France and Ivory Coast heritage feed his work as an archeological pop artist. Mixed dialects and cultures inspire his colorful, bold, and geometric work with hieroglyphic symbols emerging through sand. Gilman will also present works by local artist Jill Lear, Brazilian artist Thai Mainhard, and Hunt Slonem whose art can be found in the permanent collections of 250 museums around the world including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Pictured work is Carmen McNall’s “Enfold in a Greater Space #3”, acrylic on hand carved wood panel.

It features artwork by artists who are synesthetes – who experience synesthesia, the phenomenon by which certain people experience one sense through another – as well as work by artists who, though not synesthetes, seek to create synesthetic experiences for viewers. Synesthesia can take a wide variety of forms (perceiving letters or numbers as colors, for example, or associating a word with a scent or taste), but perception of sound as color or as shape has been particularly powerful for artists who have sought to convey synesthetic experiences. The artwork in the exhibition ranges from paintings, drawings and sculptures inspired by the synesthetic experience of music to film projections and an immersive installation.
