Winter in Idaho’s Wood River Valley means lots of snow and plenty of ways to enjoy it, including unique events like the annual Wood River Extreme Ski Joring Races. Produced by the Wood Extreme Ski Joring Association (WRESJA), this event features cowboys with their fast horses racing with brave skiers and snowboarders and promises a weekend of fast action fun that the whole family will enjoy. Ski Joring is a winter sport in which a person on skis is pulled by a horse, a dog or a motor vehicle. It is derived from the Norwegian word skikjøring, meaning “ski driving”. In the Wood River Valley horses are used. A successful run of this race means crossing the finish line of the 600-900-foot course with the skier having executed one to three jumps ranging from three to six feet high and grabbing from three to nine rings. The rider must also grab a ring. Points are deducted for missed or dropped rings and missed jumps. Speed – which often reaches 40 miles per hour – is a factor. Tours meet at 9:30am in the Mountain View Room at River Run Lodge and are guided by one of the friendly members of our guest services team (yellow coats). They will guide you around Bald Mountain’s vast terrain and wow you with some amazing historical facts about Sun Valley. Tours are open for all ski levels.

Dark Sky Dinner events feature a “farm to greenhouse” catered meal with wine for 40 people in our heated greenhouse, a “snow bar” and warming fire pits outside the greenhouse, and night sky viewing telescopes outside on the darker, north side of the Visitor Center. Prepare to bundle up! BCRD Nordic and Snowshoe Trails

For four days this season, BCRD welcomes the community to enjoy free Nordic skiing and snowshoeing on all BCRD winter trails. The 32-kilometer multi-use Wood River Trail, which runs from Ketchum to Bellevue, is always free. The Wood River Trail is groomed every other day and is open to skiers, walkers, dogs, and fat-bikes. The Ski Free Days for the 2022/23 season are: Saturday, December 10 Sunday, January 8 Saturday, February 25 Wednesday, March 22 For Ski Free Day on Saturday December 10th at Galena: – Free rentals at Galena (no reservations) – Free 30 minute skate or classic group lessons at 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, and 1:00 (no reservations – just walk into the shop)

Feberuary 25th – March 11th, 2023 The Second Annual Avalanche Rescue Practice Challenge is here! To participate, post a photo or video practicing avalanche rescue, tag @sawtoothavy and #sawtoothavy on Instagram or Facebook. The challenge runs from Feb. 25 – March 11 and participating enters you into our raffle for awesome prizes! We’ll be holding an in-person kick-off to this event on Baldy! The Friends and Sun Valley Ski Patrol are collaborating to kick off Avalanche Awareness Week and the Rescue Challenge with a Community Beacon Practice. Head to the beacon park on Baldy any time between 10 and 2 on Saturday, February 25th to run through the beacon course. Don’t know how to use one? Friends’ Instructors and Ski Patrollers will be on hand with avalanche transceivers to teach you how to use one! Running through the course enters you into our raffle for sweet prizes!

Join the Friends of the Sawtooth Avalanche Center instructors for a field day covering avalanche rescue basics, snowpack layering, avalanche terrain identification, and basic backcountry travel. Please note-you need to have attended a Friends’ Introduction to Avalanches lecture prior to participating in the field day. Started by the original founders back in 1957, this fun ski and snow board event is for non-sanctioned racers ages 3 to 12. It is held at Sun Valley’s Dollar Mountain in the spring, usually in March. The event attracts up to 250 skiers who all earn commemorative pins. The Olympic gold medal winner Picabo Street was a Kindercup champion! Other famous Sun Valley area skiers to have been past Kindercup champions include: Langely McNeal, Graham Watanabe, Wyatt Caldwell and more! We’ll skin up College and enjoy spectacular Pioneer Mountain views. Generous swag from Wild Rye will be offered!
