"The Boy, the War, and the Big Two-Hearted River" with John Maclean @ The Community Library
6:00 pm
Hemingway Writer-In-Residence John Maclean will share and discuss a new piece he’s writing for a book of essays celebrating the centennial of Ernest Hemingway’s short story, “Big Two-Hearted River.” The collection will be published in 2023—the centennial of the first notes for the short story—by the University Press of Kentucky. Maclean’s personal essay traces the importance of the Hemingway short story in the lives and writing of John and his late father Norman Maclean, but it also surveys the publishing and critical history of the story. Join us as John shares this new essay and invites your questions and feedback on this soon-to-be-published piece. This event will be livestreamed and available to view later. A book signing with Chapter One will follow. John Maclean is an award-winning author and journalist. He spent thirty year at the Chicago Tribune, most of that time as a Washington correspondent. He is the author of six books, most recently “Home Waters: A Chronicle of Family and a River.” He has also written five nonfiction books about wildland fires—”Fire on the Mountain,” “Fire and Ashes,” “The Thirtymile Fire,” “The Esperanza Fire,” and “River of Fire”—that are considered a staple of fire literature as well as ...

PASS OVER by ANTOINETTE NWANDU OCTOBER 20-23,2022 @ The Argyros Elizabeth and Thomas Tierney Theater co-directed by SAVINA BARINI + RONEY JONES PASS OVER is generously sponsored by ALI LONG In-Person on stage with a fully vaccinated company *approved by AEA SHOW DESCRIPTION: “Moses and Kitch stand around on the corner—talking smack, passing the time, and hoping that maybe today will be different. As they dream of their promised land, a stranger wanders into their space with his own agenda and derails their plans. Emotional and lyrical, Pass Over crafts everyday profanities into poetic and humorous riffs, exposing the unquestionable human spirit of young men stuck in a cycle that they are desperately trying to escape. A provocative riff on the Book of Exodus and Waiting for Godot, Pass Over is a remarkable work of politically-charged theater by a bold new American voice.” There have been several landmark productions of Pass Over since its premiere. The Spot is proud to share that we will be producing the newest version of the play, revised in 2021 to offer a different ending to this cycle of violence and injustice– one of hope. “THRILLING, POETICAL, and UNFLINCHING.”- Chris Jones, Chicago Tribune SUITABILITY: PASS ...

Kennedy Library Virtual Forum: "Hemingway's Widow" @ The Community Library
4:00 pm
Timothy Christian, professor emeritus at the University of Alberta, discusses his new book “Hemingway’s Widow: The Life and Legacy of Mary Welsh Hemingway” with Jenny Emery Davidson, executive director of The Community Library. This Kennedy Library Virtual Forum is hosted by the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston. Register online for this Zoom-only event. The program will also be recorded for later viewing through the Kennedy Library. About “Hemingway’s Widow”: A stunning portrait of the complicated woman who becomes Ernest Hemingway’s fourth wife, tracing her adventures before she meets Ernest, exploring the tumultuous years of their marriage, and evoking her merry widowhood as she shapes Hemingway’s literary legacy. Timothy Christian graduated as a Commonwealth Scholar from King’s College, Cambridge. During a varied legal career, he served as a law professor and Dean at the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta and a visiting professor in Japan and Taiwan. Christian read “A Moveable Feast” in the cafes of Aix-en-Provence when he was a young man studying French. Realizing that no one had written deeply about Mary Welsh Hemingway, Christian began researching her story–and discovered a woman vital to Hemingway’s art.
