“A Christmas Carol in the Library” – A Staged Reading @ The Community Library
6:00 pm
It’s after hours in the library on Christmas Eve, with only the cheerful Miss Trilling and the grumpy Mr. Heaps left to shelve the final books and turn out the lights. The two librarians find themselves immersed in retelling Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Aided only by the usual trappings of a library, Miss Trilling and Mr. Heaps take on more than thirty characters and bring the classic tale of miserliness and redemptive generosity to life inside our very own Community Library. Join The Community Library for this staged reading, which celebrates the power and wonder of imaginative reading together. Directed by David Janeski and read by Aly Wepplo and Matthew Gorby. Appropriate for ages 5 and up. The staged reading runs for approximately 60 minutes. Two performances: Friday, December 10 at 6:00 p.m., and Saturday, December 11 at 3:00 p.m. Space is limited, so register at www.comlib.org to join us. Proof of vaccination is required to attend in person at the Library, and both performances will also be live streamed on the Library’s Vimeo.

GREETINGS! - a Live Holiday Reading @ Community Campus Theater | Hailey | Idaho | United States
7:00 pm
In The Liberty Theatre Company’s first fully produced live reading, Andy Gorski brings his Jewish atheist fiancé to meet the folks on Christmas Eve, and his worst fears about family blow-ups are realized. But when his intellectually disabled younger brother Mickey, who’s entire vocabulary has been limited to “oh boy” and “wow”, suddenly spouts the word “Greetings!” the entire family’s belief system is turned upside down. Written by Tom Dudzick and Directed by Tess Makena, this in-person performance mixes large-scale production elements with the intimate style of a professional reading – resulting in a spectacular, thought-provoking, and hilarious holiday experience made to enchant anyone from anywhere.

This presentation will be a robust conversation between Elaine Clegg, Scott Boettger, Executive Director for the Wood River Land Trust, and the community. This evening is presented in partnership wit The Community Library and the Wood River Land Trust. Hemingway Writer-In-Residence Ariel Delgado Dixon joins us to discuss her debut novel, “Don’t Say We Didn’t Warn You.” Dixon will be joined by Mary Pauline Lowry, a 2020 resident with The Community Library and the Boise-based author of “The Roxy Letters.” Two sisters unite to survive a traumatic upbringing—from absentee parents to a wilderness camp for troubled teens—in this “relentless and spooky” (Joy Williams) debut from an essential new voice. ONE OF THE MOST ANTICIPATED BOOKS OF 2022—Good Housekeeping, Autostraddle, The Millions “When the Juvenile Transportation Services come for you in the night in a preordained kidnapping, complete with an unmarked van and husky guardsmen you can’t outmatch, you have been sold for a promise.” A young woman thinks she has escaped her past only to discover that she’s been hovering on its edges all along: She and her younger sister bide their time in a dilapidated warehouse in a desolate town north of New York City; their parents settled there with dreams of starting an art commune. "MISSION: JOY Finding Happiness in Troubled Times" Film Screening @ The Community Library | Thief River Falls | Minnesota | United States
6:00 pm
In partnership with the Flourish Foundation, The Community Library presents a free screening of MISSION: JOY – Finding Happiness in Troubled Times. About the film: Academy Award®-winning director Louie Psihoyos teams up with co-director Peggy Callahan on this documentary with unprecedented access to the unlikely friendship of two international icons who transcend religion: His Holiness the Dalai Lama & Archbishop Tutu. In their final joint mission, these self-described mischievous brothers give a master class in how to create joy in a world that was never easy for them. They offer neuroscience-backed wisdom to help each of us live with more joy, despite circumstances. Inspired by New York Times bestseller The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World, the film showcases the exchange between these two Nobel Peace Prize winners that led to that book. Consisting largely of never-before-seen footage shot over 5 days at the Dalai Lama’s residence in Dharamsala, the film invites viewers to join these luminaries behind the scenes as they recount stories from their lives, each having lived through periods of incredible difficulty and strife. With genuine affection, mutual respect and a healthy dose of teasing, these unlikely friends impart lessons gleaned from lived experience, ...

Poetry Reading with Diane Raptosh @ The Community Library
5:00 pm
Diane Raptosh’s “Hand Signs from Eternity’s Yurt” explores civic unease in a series of 22 American sonnets—unrhymed 14-lined poems. Join us as Raptosh discusses the joys of reading and writing poetry and the role of the imagination in an imperiled democracy. She will discuss poetry as one of our most underused resources for reimagining self and society. She’ll share some of her most recent work with us and will invite your questions. A book signing will follow. This event will be held outdoors on the Library’s Donaldson Robb Family Lawn on 4th Street. No registration is required. Bring your chair or blanket! (In case of inclement weather, the event will move indoors to the Lecture Hall.) Diane Raptosh’s :American Amnesiac” (Etruscan Press), was longlisted for the 2013 National Book Award in poetry. A native Idahoan and the recipient of three fellowships in literature from the Idaho Commission on the Arts, she served as the Boise Poet Laureate (2013) as well as the Idaho Writer-in-Residence (2013-2016). Martyna Majok, the 2022 Sun Valley Playwrights’ Resident, will read the opening monologue from her Pulitzer Prize-winning play, “Cost of Living,” and discuss her work and writing process. The play, on Broadway this fall, deftly challenges the typical perceptions of those living with disabilities and delves deep into the ways class, race, nationality, and wealth can create gulfs between people, even as they long for the ability to connect. A light reception will follow. Registration recommended. Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency (SVPR) is a non-profit artist retreat, commissioning program, and new play development lab based in Idaho. The mission of SVPR is to galvanize positive change within Wood River Valley’s community and beyond by giving visionary theatre artists of all backgrounds substantive time and space to focus on creating new work for the stage that produces conversations and learning opportunities locally, regionally, and nationally. Annually, SVPR provides one playwright a $10,000 commission, 13 months of individually-tailored development resources, and two months of retreat time in Ketchum, in partnership with The Community Library and The Argyros.
