Friesen+Lantz Fine Art
Feb 10 @ 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Friesen+Lantz 1st Anniversary Celebration - STEVE JENSEN @ Friesen+Lantz Fine Art | Ketchum | Idaho | United States
5:00 pm
Friesen+Lantz Fine Art’s first anniversary celebration will feature new work from environmentally conscious artist Steve Jensen. Based in Seattle WA, Jensen’s work offers glimpses into our cultural past through found objects, recycled materials, and a deep desire to take what we discard today and make it sacred and beautiful for tomorrow. Descended from a long line of Norwegian fishermen, Jensen uses the same boat making tools of his forefathers when creating his work. His sculptures appear ageless, as if dredged from unknown depths instead of being made of recycled glass, metal and found objects. “I have been using recycled materials for over 35 years. I pick steel off the beach. I love finding salvaged boat materials, especially portholes and sailboat parts. It’s always exciting to figure out how to make something beautiful out of something that was discarded.” Cultivating work that has a deeper meaning, whether by raising awareness of our environmental impact or celebrating the interconnectedness of the human condition, Friesen+Lantz vows to continue bringing insightful, personal, and powerful art to Sun Valley. Unsaid, but Understood: Listening and Silence in "Sabrina & Corina" with Dr. Dora Ramírez @ The Community Library
5:00 pm
The Latinx/Indigenous community’s experiences and stories in Kali Fajardo-Anstine’s short story collection Sabrina & Corina are often told through silence, of what is left unsaid. In “Ghost Sickness,” Ana’s mom reminds her that memory “doesn’t have to be story-memory […] It can be a picture, a feeling” (202). This text draws out intergenerational trauma by letting us enter the experiences of two generations struggling to take ownership and define the community’s historical memory. The older generation in this text carry an incredible burden of pain and disappointment, of the racism the community has experienced including environmental degradation, the missing and murdered women, and the effects of colonization on the family structure. The younger generation slowly learns to understand what is left unsaid in their community as they learn to read the silences. Dr. Dora Ramírez is a Professor of Ethnic Studies and the Director of the Anti-Racism Collective at Boise State University in the Department of Sociology. She holds a doctorate in English, with a focus on Ethnic Literature, from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Her research focuses on ideas of nation-building while examining the internalization of socio-political global effects and the influence of colonization among Latinx and Indigenous populations in ...

Wood River Extreme Skijoring @ 81 Browning Ln, Bellevue, ID | Idaho | United States
12:00 pm
Winter in Idaho’s Wood River Valley means lots of snow and plenty of ways to enjoy it, including unique events like the annual Wood River Extreme Ski Joring Races. Produced by the Wood Extreme Ski Joring Association (WRESJA), this event features cowboys with their fast horses racing with brave skiers and snowboarders and promises a weekend of fast action fun that the whole family will enjoy. Ski Joring is a winter sport in which a person on skis is pulled by a horse, a dog or a motor vehicle. It is derived from the Norwegian word skikjøring, meaning “ski driving”. In the Wood River Valley horses are used.  A successful run of this race means crossing the finish line of the 600-900-foot course with the skier having executed one to three jumps ranging from three to six feet high and grabbing from three to nine rings. The rider must also grab a ring. Points are deducted for missed or dropped rings and missed jumps. Speed – which often reaches 40 miles per hour – is a factor. Winners are based on the combined overall score for both days. This year the WRESJA races will also feature a couple’s division and ...
