Burn - New Photographs by Tuck Fauntleroy @ Gilman Contemporary | Sun Valley | Idaho | United States
12:00 am
“I like to think of the winter season as a time for the land itself to rest. Zero human activity, the silence of falling snow in one of the most remote places on earth is enchanting and reflective.” -Tuck Fauntleroy Fauntleroy’s focus for his Burn series are wildfire affected regions in Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park. They represent a mixed perspective with some images shot aerially and others shot from the ground. Like much if his other work, the aerial images were captured flying over the territory via small single engine airplanes from an open window for an unobstructed lens. Burn is timely and relevant in the current environment of climate change and the proliferation of recent fires across the western US and globally. The massive 1988 Yellowstone fires were a wake-up-call and significant warning of destruction and foreshadowing of the cost of climate events. Warming, drought, and the resulting fires have never been more dangerous. The photographs are careful compositions of positive and negative space while capturing the elegant lines and shapes created by a natural landscape scared by flame. Critical to the series is the the idea of taking something more commonly perceived as unsightly, ...

Harmonic Tension -New Paintings by Thai Mainhard @ Gilman Contemporary | Sun Valley | Idaho | United States
12:00 am
“My work is very emotional by nature. I rely on colors to set the atmosphere and play off of each other like our emotions do inside of us.” -Thai Mainhard Brazilian born painter Thai Mainhard’s practice harnesses her own raw and immediate need to create. Each abstract painting combines expressive mark making with dense blocks of color exploring the opposing forces that make up our lives. Mainhard encounters human nature, exploring happiness, frustration, surprise, connection, spirituality, and overall thinking processing. Each of her works is emotional; it is a lush expression of her inner jungle. Going through a deep internal process, the artist creates artwork that represents human nature’s fragility and opposes it to the robustness of emotions and feelings.

"Sperm Whales: The Gentle Goliaths of the Ocean" with Gaelin Rosenwaks @ The Community Library
6:00 pm
For centuries, the sperm whale has fascinated us—the world’s largest toothed predator. Like many of our co-inhabitants on the planet, sperm whales were nearly hunted to the brink of extinction. While the most famous sperm whale of all is Moby Dick, it was a young male nicknamed Physty—who fell ill in the early 1980s and came ashore just off Long Island, New York—that captured the heart of Gaelin Rosenwaks and started her on a career in marine science: studying, protecting, and documenting the world’s most marvelous ocean species. SPERM WHALES: THE GENTLE GOLIATHS OF THE OCEANS is a beautiful look at these magnificent animals. In the waters off Dominica, Rosenwaks observed—eye to eye—the close bond between mother and child firsthand. What she found is that these animals live in matriarchal family units made up of remarkable females that stay together for generations. Like elephants and humans, they take care of one another. She was able to document them sleeping, playing, nursing, and so much more about their vibrant lives both under the sea, and above it. Through her breathtaking photography and inspiring words, readers can join Rosenwaks and the whales and be inspired to help save them for future generations. ...

OPENING + 1ST ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION: 10 February 5-7PM GALLERY WALK: 17 February 5-7:30PM Steve Jensen’s work offers glimpses into our cultural past through found objects, recycled materials, and a deep desire to take what we discard today and make it sacred and beautiful for tomorrow. Descended from a long line of Norwegian fishermen, Jensen uses the same boat making tools of his forefathers when creating his work. His sculptures appear ageless, as if dredged from unknown depths instead of being made of recycled glass, metal and found objects. “I have been using recycled materials for over 35 years. I pick steel off the beach. I love finding salvaged boat materials, especially portholes and sailboat parts. It’s always exciting to figure out how to make something beautiful out of something that was discarded.” The message of Jensen’s boats is cross-cultural and reflects the influence of his extensive travels, including Egypt, Kenya, Tahiti, India, China, Thailand, Antarctica and Iceland. Those who view his work may recall their own ancestry, regardless of the origin of their family line. “For me the boats are meant to symbolize a voyage or journey, perhaps it is the voyage to the other side, or the journey into ...
