Learn how to identify redds with our River Program Director, Ryan Santo! Redds are the nests that trout create during spawning to store their eggs. The spawning season is critical to the survival of fish populations, and understanding how to identify redds, and how to avoid them is something everyone who loves this river should know. The day will start out at the Draper Preserve Pavilion at Lions Park with a brief presentation. The rest of the day will be spent walking in the river as a group, identifying and counting redds. Most of the scouting will take place in the river, so we ask that participants are comfortable walking in moving water on unstable rocky river bottom. This is a great opportunity to learn about the Big Wood River ecosystem, become a better steward of the river, and help us collect data about local rainbow trout populations.

Inspired by the yogic philosophy of Santosha (or joy), this is a place to come and let down your guard and let it all out. Class will be 75 minutes. The Boise Blues Society is a non-profit organization of blues music supporters that has been in existence for over 20 years in the Treasure Valley! Part of their mission to “promote and preserve blues music” includes providing blues musicians to give an introduction to blues music in a program entitled “Blues in the Schools” (B.I.T.S.). This program is part of their outreach efforts and is provided at no cost to the schools that participate. Over the years, the Boise Blues Society has conducted Blues In The Schools programs in Boise, Meridian, Idaho City, and Mountain Home, and they will be visiting area schools throughout the week prior to their performance here at Barrio75. The children’s book Wave, by Suzy Lee, will be posted page by page, to be viewed while walking or biking along the Wood River Trail. This wordless book has beautiful illustrations to be enjoyed by all ages. Housing Strategist Carissa Connelly, City Administrator Jade Riley and implementing partners will present the City of Ketchum’s Annual Housing Action Plan, which outlines goals, strategies, and priority actions. Drafted actions include a long-term rental incentive, a housing assistance one-stop shop, preservation of existing housing, and zoning changes to increase supply, and is informed by surveys, interviews, and other community outreach. Join us for their presentation ahead of May 17, when Ketchum voters will decide whether to increase the Local Option Tax and whether those additional funds can be used solely for workforce housing provision and support. Spending of this separate fund will be guided by the Housing Action Plan. This presentation will be livestreamed and available to view live or later on Vimeo. Seating is limited, and advance registration is recommended.

We’ll walk and collect in the morning then work on identifying them after a lunch break.
