"Every Day the River Changes: Four Weeks Down the Magdalena" @ The Community Library Vimeo
6:00 pm
Join The Community Library for a virtual evening with Jordan Salama, author of “Every Day the River Changes: Four Weeks Down the Magdalena.” An American writer of Argentine, Syrian, and Iraqi Jewish descent, Salama tells the story of the Río Magdalena, nearly one thousand miles long, the heart of Colombia. This is Gabriel García Márquez’s territory—rumor has it Macondo was partly inspired by the port town of Mompox—as much as that of the Middle Eastern immigrants who run fabric stores by its banks. Following the river from near its source high in the Andes to its mouth on the Caribbean coast, journeying by boat, bus, and improvised motobalinera, Salama writes against stereotype and toward the rich lives of those he meets. Among them are a canoe builder, biologists who study invasive hippopotamuses, a Queens transplant managing a failing hotel, a jeweler practicing the art of silver filigree, and a traveling librarian whose donkeys, Alfa and Beto, haul books to rural children. Joy, mourning, and humor come together in this astonishing debut, travel writing about a country too often seen as only a site of war, and a tale of lively adventure following a legendary river. Jordan Salama is a nonfiction ...

Native vs Nativars: What plants are best in your garden? @ zoom
12:00 am
Dr. Stephen Love will speak on the topic of “Native vs Nativars: What plants are best in your garden?” on February 9 at 7 pm via Zoom. This free presentation is sponsored by The Wood River Chapter of the Idaho Native Plant Society. Dr. Love “would like to see native plants dominate every urban landscape”. Among the topics he will cover in his talk are: When is a plant truly “native”? What is a “nativar”? Are natives better than nativars? How is this innate genetic variability altered in cultivation? Love will consider some advantages to using native plants in your landscape, including landscape sustainability resulting from drought tolerance and local adaptation; prevention of exotic species introductions that increase potential for invasiveness; and support of specialist pollinators and other small animals that depend on native plants. He feels that utilization of both garden-worthy native plants and nativars, though not truly “wild”, are critical to backyard habitat creation. Nativars are far superior to exotics, which are often the fallback option when we cannot find the native species we truly desire. Dr. Stephen Love is a University of Idaho Extension consumer horticulture specialist stationed at the Aberdeen Research and Extension Center. He earned ...

Sun Valley Opera's Signature Salon Starring Jonah Hoskins with Mary Hoskins @ The Argyros | Ketchum | Idaho | United States
5:30 pm
Jonah Hoskins is a tenor from Saratoga Springs, Utah. Since winning the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in 2020, he has been a member of the prestigious Lindemann Young Artist Development Program. He is thrilled to make his Met debut this winter in Cendrillon as the Dean of Faculty. This past Fall Jonah placed second at the International Operalia Competition. We are fortunate to be catching this rising star, while we can. Jonah’s sister, Mary, a soprano recently had an opportunity to participate at Wolf Trap Opera as a Studio Artist. She was also selected as a semi-finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. Mary learned to love singing with her family on long road trips. However, she fell into opera by accident when Jonah signed her up for audition without her foreknowledge or consent. It was at that program that she fell in love with the art form. Together they will perform beautiful arias and songs they call “car ride favorites”. The Signature Salon evening will begin at 5:30pm with a wine and light hors d’oeuvres reception followed by the concert at 6:30pm.
