“Tuesday Night Massacre: Four Senate Elections and the Radicalization of the Republican Party” with Marc C. Johnson @ The Community Library Livestream
6:00 pm
The Community Library welcomes Marc C. Johnson, author of the new book, “Tuesday Night Massacre: Four Senate Elections and the Radicalization of the Republican Party.” Johnson will discuss the book and take questions from the virtual audience. Join us on www.livestream.com/comlib for the live program. While political history has plenty to say about the impact of Ronald Reagan’s election to the presidency in 1980, four Senate races that same year have garnered far less attention—despite their similarly profound political effect. Tuesday Night Massacre looks at those races. In examining the defeat in 1980 of Idaho’s Frank Church, South Dakota’s George McGovern, John Culver of Iowa, and Birch Bayh of Indiana, Marc C. Johnson tells the story of the beginnings of the divisive partisanship that has become a constant feature of American politics. Connecting the dots between the Goldwater era of the 1960s and the ascent of Donald Trump, Tuesday Night Massacre charts the radicalization of the Republican Party and the rise of the independent expenditure campaign, with its divisive, negative techniques, a change that has deeply—and perhaps permanently—warped the culture of bipartisanship that once prevailed in American politics. Marc C. Johnson has worked as a broadcast journalist and communication and ...

“Brood” with Jackie Polzin @ The Community Library
6:00 pm
Join us for a conversation with Jackie Polzin, author of the new novel, “Brood.” Polzin is being hailed as an exquisite new literary voice–wryly funny, nakedly honest, beautifully observational, in the vein of Jenny Offill and Elizabeth Strout. Over the course of a single year, our nameless narrator heroically tries to keep her small brood of four chickens alive despite the seemingly endless challenges that caring for another creature entails. From the forty-below nights of a brutal Minnesota winter to a sweltering summer which brings a surprise tornado, she battles predators, bad luck, and the uncertainty of a future that may not look anything like the one she always imagined. Intimate and startlingly original, this slender novel is filled with wisdom, sorrow and joy. A stunning and brilliantly insightful meditation on life and longing. Polzin will be in conversation with Martha Williams, the Library’s programs and education manager. Jackie Polzin lives in St. Paul, Minnesota with her husband and children. She is a graduate of the Boise State MFA program. Brood is her first novel.

10:00 am
The Community Library and Idaho Humanities Council welcome Hannibal B. Johnson, author of “Black Wall Street 100: An American City Grapples With Its Historical Racial Trauma,” for a virtual conversation about the history and continuing implications of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. Johnson will be in conversation with David Pettyjohn, executive director of the Idaho Humanities Council, and Jenny Emery Davidson, executive director of The Community Library. On May 31, 1921, a white mob attacked the predominantly Black neighborhood of Greenwood in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Tensions among white Tulsans had been running high over Greenwood, home of the thriving business district referred to as the Black Wall Street, even before the events leading up to May 31. Over the course of eighteen hours, hundreds of Black citizens were killed, thousands were left homeless, and black-owned businesses including two newspapers, a school, a hospital, churches, hotels, and stores were destroyed or damaged by fire. The event is one of the deadliest riots and worst incidents of racial violence in U.S. history, and has remained one of the least known. Hannibal B. Johnson, a Harvard Law School graduate, is an author, attorney, and consultant. He has taught at The University of Tulsa College ...
