EVENING EXHIBITION TOUR: Dams @ Sun Valley Museum of Art | Ketchum | Idaho | United States
4:30 pm
Enjoy refreshments as you tour the exhibition with The Museum’s curators. Coinciding with renewed dialogue about the possibility of breaching dams throughout the Columbia River Basin, this BIG IDEA project offers a conversation about the impact of dams on Idaho and the American West. For more than a century, dams have shaped Idaho’s landscapes, ecosystems and economies. At this historic moment, the project considers the history of damming in the Pacific Northwest, the effects of dams on the region, and a reimagined future for rivers and the life dependent on them in the American West. SVMoA has commissioned artists Carolina Caycedo, Eirik Johnson, James Prosek and Rachel Teannalach to create new work for the exhibition, including large-scale and immersive installations.

6:00 pm
Join The Community Library for the launch of local author Julie Weston’s newest book, “Moon Bones.” The death of a Chinese man leads photographer Nellie Burns and Sheriff Asteguitoiri to Vienna, a ghost town in the Stanley Basin in 1920’s Idaho. Sammy Ah Kee, who taught Nellie to drive, found the man’s body and is accused of killing him. With the help of Nellie’s dog Moonshine, Nellie and the sheriff discover a conspiracy dedicated to enslaving Chinese immigrants. Days later, Sammy and Nellie explore the mine entrance and unearth a secret. Mayhem and murder follow all of their explorations. The conspirators capture and torture the sheriff, leaving him for dead. Moonie, Rosy Kipling, Sammy, and Alphonso, a sheepherder from Nellie’s time in the Basin, help Nellie follow the complex trails and motives in this western landscape lurking with greed and evil. Julie Weston is the award-winning author of five Nellie Burns and Moonshine novels: “Moonshadows,” “Basque Moon,” “Moonscape,” “Miners’ Moon,” and “Moon Bones,” and of the nonfiction book, “The Good Times Are All Gone Now: Life, Death, and Rebirth in an Idaho Mining Town. “She is also the coauthor of “The Magical Universe of the Ancients: A Desert Journal,” a ...

Wildlife Science Pub @ Sawtooth Brewery - Ketchum | Ketchum | Idaho | United States
6:00 pm
Based on the Science Cafe model developed in Europe in the 1990s, ICL is pleased to present Science Pub as a fun way to bring educators, scientists, presenters, and the public together. Come on out, grab a beer, and hear about our wildlife program with Jeff Abrams, ICL’s new wildlife associate! Idahoans care deeply about the native creatures that call the Gem State home. Historically, conservation efforts have focused almost exclusively on game animals. In recent years, however, science has told us that the threats facing the overwhelming majority of Idaho’s wildlife must be addressed with a much broader conservation management perspective, emphasizing diversity and resiliency. Going forward, habitat concerns and climate change will increasingly be at the center of comprehensive efforts to ensure security for all Idaho’s critters – from woodpeckers and Big-Eared bats to fishers and wolverines. Please join ICL, as we host a conversation about our renewed emphasis on Idaho’s wildlife and emerging ideas about managing all species across the landscape to address the increasing challenges they face. No RSVP or scientific background is required. Just bring your curiosity, sense of humor, and appetite for drinks and knowledge!
