12:00 am
OPENING + 1ST ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION: 10 February 5-7PM GALLERY WALK: 17 February 5-7:30PM Steve Jensen’s work offers glimpses into our cultural past through found objects, recycled materials, and a deep desire to take what we discard today and make it sacred and beautiful for tomorrow. Descended from a long line of Norwegian fishermen, Jensen uses the same boat making tools of his forefathers when creating his work. His sculptures appear ageless, as if dredged from unknown depths instead of being made of recycled glass, metal and found objects. “I have been using recycled materials for over 35 years. I pick steel off the beach. I love finding salvaged boat materials, especially portholes and sailboat parts. It’s always exciting to figure out how to make something beautiful out of something that was discarded.” The message of Jensen’s boats is cross-cultural and reflects the influence of his extensive travels, including Egypt, Kenya, Tahiti, India, China, Thailand, Antarctica and Iceland. Those who view his work may recall their own ancestry, regardless of the origin of their family line. “For me the boats are meant to symbolize a voyage or journey, perhaps it is the voyage to the other side, or the journey into ...

Living with Wildlife: Ornamental Yew - How to Identify and Remove It From Your Home and Neighborhood @ The Community Library
6:30 pm
Over the past several years wildlife throughout the Wood River Valley has died after eating Japanese yew, an ornamental plant often found in landscaping around homes and businesses across Idaho. Over the last two years, at least 20 elk and 2 moose have died after eating yew. Even with a 2016 Blaine County ordinance, ordinance number 2016-01, that has also been adopted by the cities of Ketchum and Hailey, the plant continues to be found in many parts of the county and in Wood River Valley communities. To help residents identify Japanese yew, Idaho Fish and Game and their Wildlife Smart Communities coalition partners will offer a 1-hour community presentation on yew identification and removal guidelines. We’ll also talk about other human-wildlife issues happening in Blaine County, such as wildlife entanglements, safety around mountain lions and moose and how to keep black bears from getting access to unsecured residential garbage and becoming food-conditioned. Register online to reserve your seat. The presentation will be livestreamed and available to view later.

The Color of Sound @ Sun Valley Museum of Art
12:00 am
The Color of Sound explores the relationship between art and synesthetic experience. It features artwork by artists who are synesthetes – who experience synesthesia, the phenomenon by which certain people experience one sense through another – as well as work by artists who, though not synesthetes, seek to create synesthetic experiences for viewers. Synesthesia can take a wide variety of forms (perceiving letters or numbers as colors, for example, or associating a word with a scent or taste), but perception of sound as color or as shape has been particularly powerful for artists who have sought to convey synesthetic experiences. The artwork in the exhibition ranges from paintings, drawings and sculptures inspired by the synesthetic experience of music to film projections and an immersive installation.

"Warrior Women" Film Screening and Q&A @ The Community Library
6:00 pm
In the 1970s, with the swagger of unapologetic Indianness, organizers of the American Indian Movement (AIM) fought for Native liberation and survival as a community of extended families. “Warrior Women” is the story of Madonna Thunder Hawk, one such AIM leader who shaped a kindred group of activists’ children – including her daughter Marcy – into the “We Will Remember” Survival School as a Native alternative to government-run education. Together, Madonna and Marcy fought for Native rights in an environment that made them more comrades than mother- daughter. Today, with Marcy now a mother herself, both are still at the forefront of Native issues, fighting against the environmental devastation of the Dakota Access Pipeline and for Indigenous cultural values. Through a circular Indigenous style of storytelling, this film explores what it means to navigate a movement and motherhood and how activist legacies are passed down and transformed from generation to generation in the context of colonizing government that meets Native resistance with violence. The film runs 64 minutes and will be followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Dr. Elizabeth A. Castle, who will join us remotely. This program is part of the 2023 community-wide Winter Read.
