As they dream of their promised land, a stranger wanders into their space with his own agenda and derails their plans. Emotional and lyrical, Pass Over crafts everyday profanities into poetic and humorous riffs, exposing the unquestionable human spirit of young men stuck in a cycle that they are desperately trying to escape. A provocative riff on the Book of Exodus and Waiting for Godot, Pass Over is a remarkable work of politically-charged theater by a bold new American voice.” There have been several landmark productions of Pass Over since its premiere. The Spot is proud to share that we will be producing the newest version of the play, revised in 2021 to offer a different ending to this cycle of violence and injustice– one of hope. “THRILLING, POETICAL, and UNFLINCHING.”- Chris Jones, Chicago Tribune SUITABILITY: PASS ...

A Conversation with Martyna Majok, 2022 Sun Valley Playwrights' Resident @ The Community Library
6:00 pm
Martyna Majok, the 2022 Sun Valley Playwrights’ Resident, will read the opening monologue from her Pulitzer Prize-winning play, “Cost of Living,” and discuss her work and writing process. The play, on Broadway this fall, deftly challenges the typical perceptions of those living with disabilities and delves deep into the ways class, race, nationality, and wealth can create gulfs between people, even as they long for the ability to connect. A light reception will follow. Registration recommended. Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency (SVPR) is a non-profit artist retreat, commissioning program, and new play development lab based in Idaho. The mission of SVPR is to galvanize positive change within Wood River Valley’s community and beyond by giving visionary theatre artists of all backgrounds substantive time and space to focus on creating new work for the stage that produces conversations and learning opportunities locally, regionally, and nationally. Annually, SVPR provides one playwright a $10,000 commission, 13 months of individually-tailored development resources, and two months of retreat time in Ketchum, in partnership with The Community Library and The Argyros.

"No Visible Bruises" with Rachel Louise Snyder @ The Community Library
6:00 pm
We call it domestic violence. We call it private violence. Sometimes we call it intimate terrorism. But whatever we call it, we generally do not believe it has anything to do with us. Rachel Louise Snyder frames this urgent and immersive account of the scale of domestic violence around key stories that explode the common myths — that if things were bad enough victims would just leave; that a violent person cannot become nonviolent; that shelter is an adequate response; and more insidiously, that violence inside the home is disconnected from other forms of violence. Through the stories of victims, perpetrators, law enforcement, and reform movements, Snyder explores the real roots of private violence, its far-reaching consequences for society, and what it will take to truly address it. Join The Community Library and The Advocates for this free community event and conversation with Rachel Louise Snyder, author of “No Visible Bruises: What We Don’t Know About Domestic Violence Can Kill Us,” a finalist for the 2019 National Book Critics Circle Award in General Nonfiction, winner of a Kirkus Award in Nonfiction, a New York Times Top 10 Books of the Year, and winner of the LA Times Book Award and ...

A reading of IRONBOUND @ Argyros Performing Arts Center
7:00 pm
Written by Pulitzer Prizer-Winner Martyna Majok Directed by MacArthur “Genius Grant” Fellow Samuel D. Hunter Featuring David Janseki, Nick Sacks & Aly Wepplo At a bus stop in a run-down New Jersey town, Darja, a Polish immigrant cleaning lady, is done talking about feelings; it’s time to talk money. Over the course of 22 years, three relationships, and three presidencies, Darja negotiates for her future with men who can offer her love or security, but never both. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Martyna Majok’s IRONBOUND is a darkly funny, heartbreaking portrait of a woman for whom love is a luxury—and a liability—as she fights to survive in America. The reading is directed by MacArthur “Genius Grant” Fellow and Idaho-native Samuel D. Hunter (THE WHALE; A CASE FOR THE EXISTENCE OF GOD). Majok is Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency’s 2022-2023 playwright. This reading of IRONBOUND is part of SVPR’s events to kick off Majok’s year-long engagement. During 2022-2023, she will be offered substantive time, space, and resources to write a new work for the stage. Part of her residency will include writing time at the historic Ernest and Mary Hemingway House in Ketchum, which is managed by The Community Library Association as a private ...
