Returning for its 12th year, SVFF kicks off another five days of Films, Coffee Talks, Parties and more. SVFF supports independent film and the magic of storytelling. It’s mission to celebrate and award filmmakers who are established and emerging has earned the Festival accolades by the film industry, film festival goers, film lovers, and filmmakers. The year-round Sun Valley Film Initiative develops professionals and illuminates the process of filmmaking, propelling emerging voices with grants and education. Since 2012 the Sun Valley Film Festival has invited fans and filmmakers to America’s first ski resort to celebrate the magic of storytelling. Sun Valley Resort is excited to host the Toyota U.S. Alpine Championships presented by Stifel kicking off April 2 and welcoming elite and next-generation ski racers vying for spots on the Stifel U.S. Alpine Ski Team. The racing event, which runs April 2-5, is the final competition on the hotly contended US national ski racing circuit and is the culmination of a season-long showcase of the best of the best in US ski racing athleticism. Saturday starts the week of events with training opportunities for racers and a sponsor village and live apres music in Warm Springs Plaza. Sunday, April 2, the racing kicks off with men’s and women’s super-G followed by Clicquot in the Snow Party at Warm Springs and the Opening Ceremony at Town Square in Ketchum featuring a Parade of Athletes and a free concert by Lowdown Brass Band. The 6th Annual Sun Valley Tour de Force on July 20-22, 2023 is a weekend of epic proportions for car lovers of all ages. Eight events take place over the course of three days. The signature event of the weekend is the ‘NO SPEED LIMIT’ high speed runs at Phantom Hill. Located in the heart of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, 3.2 miles of state highway becomes a no-speed limit zone. For one day only, drivers are allowed to put their machines to the ultimate test. In 2019, all previously recorded speed records were broken when a Bugatti Chiron hit 253.01mph. The Sun Valley Music Festival’s 39th Summer Season presents a star-studded lineup of guest artists for over three weeks of free concerts in the beautiful, natural surroundings of Sun Valley, Idaho. Pianists Yefim Bronfman and Orli Shaham, mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke, and violinist Augustin Hadelich will headline concerts featuring works by Schumann, Ravel, Mahler, and Tchaikovsky. Other programs include works by contemporary American composers including Mason Bates, Michael Abels, and Michael Tilson Thomas. For a very special Pops Night, Stéphane Denève, Music Director of the St. Louis Symphony, will lead the Festival Orchestra in an evening of the music of John Williams. Blaine County Recreation District invites the community to join in the free 2023 Wood River Trail Challenge, which runs from January 27 through February 28 To complete the challenge, participants must ski, walk, snowshoe, or snowbike the entire 32 kilometers of the Wood River Trail, from Hulen Meadows in Ketchum to Gannett Road in Bellevue. Participants may tackle the challenge all at once or break the trail up into sections and complete them between January 27 – February 28. Finishers will need to complete and mail a form to receive a prize from the BCRD. The Wood River Trail is a 32-kilometer multi-use, year-round path that provides a non-motorized connection between the Wood River Valley communities of Bellevue, Hailey, Ketchum, and Sun Valley. “I like to think of the winter season as a time for the land itself to rest. Zero human activity, the silence of falling snow in one of the most remote places on earth is enchanting and reflective.” -Tuck Fauntleroy Fauntleroy’s focus for his Burn series are wildfire affected regions in Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park. They represent a mixed perspective with some images shot aerially and others shot from the ground. Like much if his other work, the aerial images were captured flying over the territory via small single engine airplanes from an open window for an unobstructed lens. Burn is timely and relevant in the current environment of climate change and the proliferation of recent fires across the western US and globally. The massive 1988 Yellowstone fires were a wake-up-call and significant warning of destruction and foreshadowing of the cost of climate events. Warming, drought, and the resulting fires have never been more dangerous. The photographs are careful compositions of positive and negative space while capturing the elegant lines and shapes created by a natural landscape scared by flame. For four days this season, BCRD welcomes the community to enjoy free Nordic skiing and snowshoeing on all BCRD winter trails. The 32-kilometer multi-use Wood River Trail, which runs from Ketchum to Bellevue, is always free. The Wood River Trail is groomed every other day and is open to skiers, walkers, dogs, and fat-bikes. The Ski Free Days for the 2022/23 season are: Saturday, December 10 Sunday, January 8 Saturday, February 25 Wednesday, March 22 For Ski Free Day on Saturday December 10th at Galena: – Free rentals at Galena (no reservations) – Free 30 minute skate or classic group lessons at 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, and 1:00 (no reservations – just walk into the shop)

The Friends and Sun Valley Ski Patrol are collaborating to kick off Avalanche Awareness Week and the Rescue Challenge with a Community Beacon Practice. Head to the beacon park on Baldy any time between 10 and 2 on Saturday, February 25th to run through the beacon course. Don’t know how to use one? Friends’ Instructors and Ski Patrollers will be on hand to teach you how to use one! Running through the course enters you into our raffle for sweet prizes!

Basics of Using Native Plants in the Home Landscape

In this talk sponsored by the Wood River Chapter of the Idaho Native Plant Society, Mindy Rider will discuss how native plants differ from ornamental varieties. She will outline their differing water needs and growth habits. Rider will make some recommendations about her favorite natives to use in your landscape and how to start them from seeds. Plenty of time will be set aside to answer your questions. Mindy Rider is well qualified to educate about native plants. She has worked as a landscaper and horticulturalist for 25 years. Three years of that time was at a native plant nursery in Bend, Oregon where she grew natives and assisted homeowners with their selections. Rider currently starts, grows and installs native plants at the Hunger Coalition as part of her job as Food Production Manager.
