GREETINGS! - a Live Holiday Reading @ Community Campus Theater | Hailey | Idaho | United States
7:00 pm
In The Liberty Theatre Company’s first fully produced live reading, Andy Gorski brings his Jewish atheist fiancé to meet the folks on Christmas Eve, and his worst fears about family blow-ups are realized. But when his intellectually disabled younger brother Mickey, who’s entire vocabulary has been limited to “oh boy” and “wow”, suddenly spouts the word “Greetings!” the entire family’s belief system is turned upside down. Written by Tom Dudzick and Directed by Tess Makena, this in-person performance mixes large-scale production elements with the intimate style of a professional reading – resulting in a spectacular, thought-provoking, and hilarious holiday experience made to enchant anyone from anywhere.

A Tuna Christmas @ Argyros Performing Arts Center
7:00 pm
In this hilarious sequel to Greater Tuna, it’s Christmas in the third-smallest town in Texas. Radio station OKKK news personalities Thurston Wheelis and Arles Struvie report on various Yuletide activities, including the hot competition in the annual Christmas lawn-display contest, won 14 times in a row by Vera Carp. A mysterious “Christmas Phantom”, known for vandalizing the yard displays, threatens to throw the contest into turmoil and has the contestants on edge. Among the subplots are Stanley Bumiller’s attempts to end his probation and leave Tuna, Bertha Bumiller’s struggle to hold her family together at Christmastime, and Joe Bob Lipsey’s fight to mount successfully his production of A Christmas Carol despite the town controller of the electric company threatening to turn the lights off. The movie is both an affectionate commentary and satire of small town, Southern life and attitudes. A Tuna Christmas is the second in a series of comedic movies set in the fictional town of Tuna, Texas. Paulette Tavormina "Seizing Beauty" photography exhibition at Gilman Contemporary @ Gilman Contemporary | Sun Valley | Idaho | United States
12:00 am
This December Gilman Contemporary will exhibit “Seizing Beauty” featuring photographer Paulette Tavormina’s carefully crafted tableaus informed and inspired by 17th century painting. Often using a rich, dark backdrop and subtle lighting, Tavormina captures the depth and nuance of these paintings in her photographs. Drawing on her personal experience as well as an understanding of art history, the artist’s hand is present throughout the compositions. Sourcing from farmer’s markets around New York City, Tavormina must shoot within the constraints of the seasons. Her images hold an understanding of time – the flowers, food, and creatures have a finite expiration. Originally taking inspiration from the work of 17th century masters of still life, such as Giovanna Garzoni Francisco de Zurbarán, Adriaen Coorte and Maria Sibylla Merian, Tavormina has created work that continues upon the tradition of the still-life as an artform. Each of her photographs is carefully crafted and is the result of careful consideration of light and placement. The directness of Paulette’s work exposes the connection between humans, nature, and time. Tavormina was awarded the Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant in 2016. Her monograph book, Paulette Tavormina: Seizing Beauty was published by The Monacelli Press, 2016 and reviewed by The New York Times ...

Upbeat with Alasdair: What Does a Conductor Do, Anyway? @ The Community Library | Ketchum | Idaho | United States
6:30 pm
People have been using batons to “conduct” since the end of the 7th century, and the practice has become increasingly prevalent since. But why? As modern instruments developed, resulting in larger ensembles, helping musicians play together became more difficult. Conductors do that, but much more. They also shape phrases and interpret the composer’s intent. Find out how it all works, when Music Director Alasdair Neale hosts the next installment of his popular Upbeat with Alasdair speaking series, in-person at the Community Library and livestreamed on the Festival website, YouTube channel, and on the Community Library’s Vimeo page. How to attend in person: Reservations to attend in person begin Friday, December 17, at 9:00 AM (MT) on the Festival website (svmusicfestival.org), or contact the Festival office at [email protected] or 208.622.5607. The Sun Valley Music Festival and Community Library are committed to bringing programming to the community safely. Proof of vaccination against COVID-19 is required by the Library to attend this event (a physical vaccination card or a photo of your vaccine card are both acceptable).
