As they dream of their promised land, a stranger wanders into their space with his own agenda and derails their plans. Emotional and lyrical, Pass Over crafts everyday profanities into poetic and humorous riffs, exposing the unquestionable human spirit of young men stuck in a cycle that they are desperately trying to escape. A provocative riff on the Book of Exodus and Waiting for Godot, Pass Over is a remarkable work of politically-charged theater by a bold new American voice.” There have been several landmark productions of Pass Over since its premiere. The Spot is proud to share that we will be producing the newest version of the play, revised in 2021 to offer a different ending to this cycle of violence and injustice– one of hope. “THRILLING, POETICAL, and UNFLINCHING.”- Chris Jones, Chicago Tribune SUITABILITY: PASS ...

Las Cafeteras @ Wood River High School Performing Arts Theatre | Hailey | Idaho | United States
7:30 pm
Born and raised East of the Los Angeles River, Las Cafeteras are remixing roots music as modern-day troubadours. They are a sonic explosion of Afro-Mexican rhythms, electronic beats and powerful rhymes that document stories of a community seeking to “build a world where many worlds fit.” From Afro-Mexican to Americana, from Soul to Son Jarocho, from Roots to Rock and Hip Hop, Las Cafeteras take folk music to the future. Las Cafeteras honor the past by using electrifying traditional instrumentation like the eight-string Jarana, four-string Requinto, Quijada (donkey jawbone) and Tarima (a wooden platform). Las Cafeteras sing in five distinct languages, English, Spanish, Spanglish, Love and Justice…and they believe everyone understands at least one of those languages. PART OF SVMOA’S 2-MONTH-LONG COMMUNITY CELEBRATION “HONORING TRADITIONS: DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS,” MADE POSSIBLE IN PART THROUGH A MAJOR GRANT FROM THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES: DEMOCRACY DEMANDS WISDOM.

A Conversation with Martyna Majok, 2022 Sun Valley Playwrights' Resident @ The Community Library
6:00 pm
Martyna Majok, the 2022 Sun Valley Playwrights’ Resident, will read the opening monologue from her Pulitzer Prize-winning play, “Cost of Living,” and discuss her work and writing process. The play, on Broadway this fall, deftly challenges the typical perceptions of those living with disabilities and delves deep into the ways class, race, nationality, and wealth can create gulfs between people, even as they long for the ability to connect. A light reception will follow. Registration recommended. Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency (SVPR) is a non-profit artist retreat, commissioning program, and new play development lab based in Idaho. The mission of SVPR is to galvanize positive change within Wood River Valley’s community and beyond by giving visionary theatre artists of all backgrounds substantive time and space to focus on creating new work for the stage that produces conversations and learning opportunities locally, regionally, and nationally. Annually, SVPR provides one playwright a $10,000 commission, 13 months of individually-tailored development resources, and two months of retreat time in Ketchum, in partnership with The Community Library and The Argyros.

"No Visible Bruises" with Rachel Louise Snyder @ The Community Library
6:00 pm
We call it domestic violence. We call it private violence. Sometimes we call it intimate terrorism. But whatever we call it, we generally do not believe it has anything to do with us. Rachel Louise Snyder frames this urgent and immersive account of the scale of domestic violence around key stories that explode the common myths — that if things were bad enough victims would just leave; that a violent person cannot become nonviolent; that shelter is an adequate response; and more insidiously, that violence inside the home is disconnected from other forms of violence. Through the stories of victims, perpetrators, law enforcement, and reform movements, Snyder explores the real roots of private violence, its far-reaching consequences for society, and what it will take to truly address it. Join The Community Library and The Advocates for this free community event and conversation with Rachel Louise Snyder, author of “No Visible Bruises: What We Don’t Know About Domestic Violence Can Kill Us,” a finalist for the 2019 National Book Critics Circle Award in General Nonfiction, winner of a Kirkus Award in Nonfiction, a New York Times Top 10 Books of the Year, and winner of the LA Times Book Award and ...
