Returning for its 12th year, SVFF kicks off another five days of Films, Coffee Talks, Parties and more. SVFF supports independent film and the magic of storytelling. It’s mission to celebrate and award filmmakers who are established and emerging has earned the Festival accolades by the film industry, film festival goers, film lovers, and filmmakers. The year-round Sun Valley Film Initiative develops professionals and illuminates the process of filmmaking, propelling emerging voices with grants and education. Since 2012 the Sun Valley Film Festival has invited fans and filmmakers to America’s first ski resort to celebrate the magic of storytelling. In the past, Festival guests include Hollywood legends such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Clint Eastwood, Jodie Foster, Geena Davis, and Oliver Stone as well as avant-garde writers and filmmakers like Stephen Gaghan and Mark and Jay Duplass. U.S Alpine Championships

Sun Valley Resort is excited to host the Toyota U.S. Alpine Championships presented by Stifel kicking off April 2 and welcoming elite and next-generation ski racers vying for spots on the Stifel U.S. Alpine Ski Team. The racing event, which runs April 2-5, is the final competition on the hotly contended US national ski racing circuit and is the culmination of a season-long showcase of the best of the best in US ski racing athleticism. Saturday starts the week of events with training opportunities for racers and a sponsor village and live apres music in Warm Springs Plaza. Sunday, April 2, the racing kicks off with men’s and women’s super-G followed by Clicquot in the Snow Party at Warm Springs and the Opening Ceremony at Town Square in Ketchum featuring a Parade of Athletes and a free concert by Lowdown Brass Band. The 6th Annual Sun Valley Tour de Force on July 20-22, 2023 is a weekend of epic proportions for car lovers of all ages. Eight events take place over the course of three days. The signature event of the weekend is the ‘NO SPEED LIMIT’ high speed runs at Phantom Hill. Located in the heart of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, 3.2 miles of state highway becomes a no-speed limit zone. For one day only, drivers are allowed to put their machines to the ultimate test. In 2019, all previously recorded speed records were broken when a Bugatti Chiron hit 253.01mph. This is truly an experience of a lifetime. Additional weekend events include scenic drives, SVTdF Car Show at Festival Meadows, hosted sponsor events and our fundraiser; Cars & Comedy. The Sun Valley Music Festival’s 39th Summer Season presents a star-studded lineup of guest artists for over three weeks of free concerts in the beautiful, natural surroundings of Sun Valley, Idaho. Pianists Yefim Bronfman and Orli Shaham, mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke, and violinist Augustin Hadelich will headline concerts featuring works by Schumann, Ravel, Mahler, and Tchaikovsky. Other programs include works by contemporary American composers including Mason Bates, Michael Abels, and Michael Tilson Thomas. For a very special Pops Night, Stéphane Denève, Music Director of the St. Louis Symphony, will lead the Festival Orchestra in an evening of the music of John Williams. You don’t have to be as crazy as some of Shakespeare’s characters in Hamlet to feel that keying out plants can be a maddening experience. In this beginner’s look at keying, Lisa Horton will tease our curiosity with a painless activity introducing the dichotomous plant key. We’ll talk about how and why plants got their names, learn a little terminology and then plunge into keying out some plants to genus level. You’ll leave having had some fun and learned a little bit. Lisa Horton holds a M.S. in Plant Anatomy and is one of the usual suspects leading our Wood River Chapter plant walks. She has also made a number of wildflower videos for Eye on Sun Valley. In 2016, April Norton joined the Jackson/Teton County Housing Department as its first director, focusing on partnerships to create affordable housing in the Jackson Hole area. She spent the previous decade developing programs and projects that help communities thrive. Through her work at the LOR Foundation, she engaged with rural landscapes and people throughout the Intermountain West, working on projects that included land and water conservation and affordable housing. In many respects, the Jackson Hole area is a peer community and as such has similar struggles. April will describe these struggles and successes, what makes resort communities’ housing challenges unique, and what solutions and tools work well there. One such solution is deed-restricting housing units to people who live and/or work in the area and by income – which can be accomplished with a range of tools. Her county-wide efforts and diverse work experience also contributes to her understanding of the different roles that non-profits, governments, and for-profits play in the housing sphere and how best to allocate funds. Learn about the history of the Galena Lodge area and the magical landscape of winter ecology and animal tracking. January 5th – March 23 – Snowshoe with a Ranger every Thursday at 11 am. Meet on the porch of Galena Lodge. Program lasts about 2 hours and covers 1.5 miles with stops along the way. Rent snowshoes online ahead of time from Galena Lodge (see below). “The World is Our Stage: The Global Rhetorical Presidency and the Cold War”

Crowds swarm when U.S. presidents travel abroad, though many never hear their voices. The presidential body, moving from one secured location to another, communicates as much or more to these audiences than the texts of their speeches. In “The World is Our Stage,” Allison M. Prasch considers how presidential appearances overseas broadcast American superiority during the Cold War. Drawing on extensive archival research, Prasch examines five foundational moments in the development of what she calls the “global rhetorical presidency:” Truman at Potsdam, Eisenhower’s “Goodwill Tours,” Kennedy in West Berlin, Nixon in the People’s Republic of China, and Reagan in Normandy. In each case, Prasch reveals how the president’s physical presence defined the boundaries of the “Free World” and elevated the United States as the central actor in Cold War geopolitics. This program is presented in partnership with the Frank Church Institute at Boise State University. The event will be livestreamed and available to view later. Allison M. Prasch is assistant professor of rhetoric, politics, and culture at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. She will be joined by Sam Martin, scholar of public address and political communication with the Frank Church Institute.
