AVATARS of Black Joy @ Friesen + Lantz Fine Art | Ketchum | Idaho | United States
12:00 am
Black women are a cornerstone of the nation and yet U.S. history often pushes them aside. In this collection, I capture Black joy and the exuberance of being free to enjoy Black women’s significance, dignity, and beauty. Accentuating their skin and using eye contact, I challenge the viewer to accept that any intimidation felt requires self-reflection and highlights how we must combat the untrue beauty standards built from generations of internalized colonization. This exhibit is dedicated to the women who have had a deep influence on me throughout my life. In celebrating them, I aim to honor not only the women but also my father who taught me to respect, listen to, and honor the women in my life. After all, in chess, the queen is the most powerful. – Christopher Adam Williams

12:00 am
What does it mean when the brain begins to die before the body? Connections that were once there are broken and never repaired. Countless experiences that made up a “life” no longer inform anything. What remains? The present. What happens when the brain scrambles to survive, making new neural connections to make sense of an increasingly confusing present? Primal instinct is colored by the ever unfamiliar. There’s no fear where there’s no awareness of context. And love? Love is met with love and the hungers fall away.

12:00 am
Every August for the past 45 years, the Killebrew-Thompson Memorial Golf Tournament in Sun Valley, Idaho has gathered celebrities, sponsors, participants, Members of Congress and supporters with one common goal: to find a cure for leukemia and other cancers. Started in 1976 by Hall of Famer and Idaho native, Harmon Killebrew, and Senator Ralph Harding, in memory of the Minnesota Twins shortstop, Danny Thompson, this tournament has evolved into one of the leading fundraisers of its kind for cancer research. We are proud to announce that the 2021 contribution to our beneficiaries totaled $1,000,000! The proceeds from the event go directly to the Masonic Cancer Center at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and to the St. Luke’s Cancer Institute, headquartered in Boise, ID.  To date, the tournament has donated $20 million to life saving research, thanks to the dedicated commitment of our sponsors and guests. Our beneficiaries leverage these funds 3-5 fold through Federal and other matching sources, increasing the impact of our annual contribution by up to $5 million annually. Becoming a part of this worthy cause not only makes important strides in cancer research possible, but also means enjoying four days in beautiful Sun Valley, Idaho.  We encourage you to participate in the event, ...

Writing Workshop: Writing the American Sonnet @ The Community Library
2:00 pm
What in the heck is going on in America? And what can I do to begin to envision a better world? There is perhaps no better way to investigate these questions than to write about them through the form of the American sonnet. The American sonnet is a looser, more musical and inventive variation than its traditional counterpart. Having no required rhyme scheme or specific meter, the poet has freedom to innovate their own constraints within 14 lines. We will compose anywhere between one and three sonnets. This workshop will be taught by Diane Raptosh, whose collection “American Amnesiac” (Etruscan Press), was longlisted for the 2013 National Book Award in poetry. A native Idahoan and the recipient of three fellowships in literature from the Idaho Commission on the Arts, she served as the Boise Poet Laureate (2013) as well as the Idaho Writer-in-Residence (2013-2016). In 2018 she won the Idaho Governor’s Arts Award in Excellence. She teaches literature and creative writing and co-directs the program in Criminal Justice/Prison Studies at the College of Idaho. Her seventh collection, “Run: A Verse-History of Victoria Woodhull,” was published by Etruscan 2021. Her newest chapbook, “Hand Signs from Eternity’s Yurt,” was published in June ...

Poetry Reading with Diane Raptosh @ The Community Library
5:00 pm
Diane Raptosh’s “Hand Signs from Eternity’s Yurt” explores civic unease in a series of 22 American sonnets—unrhymed 14-lined poems. Characterized by a sense of informed resistance and revolutionary compassion, the poems seek a “conscious recoupling of feeling / with thought” in the hopes that empathy might birth a new strain of democracy. Join us as Raptosh discusses the joys of reading and writing poetry and the role of the imagination in an imperiled democracy. She will discuss poetry as one of our most underused resources for reimagining self and society. She’ll share some of her most recent work with us and will invite your questions. A book signing will follow. This event will be held outdoors on the Library’s Donaldson Robb Family Lawn on 4th Street. No registration is required. Bring your chair or blanket! (In case of inclement weather, the event will move indoors to the Lecture Hall.) Diane Raptosh’s :American Amnesiac” (Etruscan Press), was longlisted for the 2013 National Book Award in poetry.
