Returning for its 12th year, SVFF kicks off another five days of Films, Coffee Talks, Parties and more. SVFF supports independent film and the magic of storytelling. It’s mission to celebrate and award filmmakers who are established and emerging has earned the Festival accolades by the film industry, film festival goers, film lovers, and filmmakers. The year-round Sun Valley Film Initiative develops professionals and illuminates the process of filmmaking, propelling emerging voices with grants and education. Since 2012 the Sun Valley Film Festival has invited fans and filmmakers to America’s first ski resort to celebrate the magic of storytelling. In the past, Festival guests include Hollywood legends such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Clint Eastwood, Jodie Foster, Geena Davis, and Oliver Stone as well as avant-garde writers and filmmakers like Stephen Gaghan and Mark and Jay Duplass. U.S Alpine Championships

Sun Valley Resort is excited to host the Toyota U.S. Alpine Championships presented by Stifel kicking off April 2 and welcoming elite and next-generation ski racers vying for spots on the Stifel U.S. Alpine Ski Team. The racing event, which runs April 2-5, is the final competition on the hotly contended US national ski racing circuit and is the culmination of a season-long showcase of the best of the best in US ski racing athleticism. Saturday starts the week of events with training opportunities for racers and a sponsor village and live apres music in Warm Springs Plaza. Sunday, April 2, the racing kicks off with men’s and women’s super-G followed by Clicquot in the Snow Party at Warm Springs and the Opening Ceremony at Town Square in Ketchum featuring a Parade of Athletes and a free concert by Lowdown Brass Band. The 6th Annual Sun Valley Tour de Force on July 20-22, 2023 is a weekend of epic proportions for car lovers of all ages. Eight events take place over the course of three days. The signature event of the weekend is the ‘NO SPEED LIMIT’ high speed runs at Phantom Hill. Located in the heart of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, 3.2 miles of state highway becomes a no-speed limit zone. For one day only, drivers are allowed to put their machines to the ultimate test. In 2019, all previously recorded speed records were broken when a Bugatti Chiron hit 253.01mph. Now celebrating its 29th year, SVWC 2023 will be held Saturday, July 22 through Monday, July 24 at the stunning Sun Valley Resort and Pavilion. The Sun Valley Music Festival’s 39th Summer Season presents a star-studded lineup of guest artists for over three weeks of free concerts in the beautiful, natural surroundings of Sun Valley, Idaho. Pianists Yefim Bronfman and Orli Shaham, mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke, and violinist Augustin Hadelich will headline concerts featuring works by Schumann, Ravel, Mahler, and Tchaikovsky. Other programs include works by contemporary American composers including Mason Bates, Michael Abels, and Michael Tilson Thomas. For a very special Pops Night, Stéphane Denève, Music Director of the St. Louis Symphony, will lead the Festival Orchestra in an evening of the music of John Williams. Each December Gilman Contemporary celebrates the diversity of the artists they bring to Sun Valley with a dynamic group exhibition. This year the gallery teases future summer exhibitions including Carmen McNall and Mayme Kratz, who will have solo exhibitions in 2023. Also featured in December’s group exhibit are gallery newcomers Matt Duffin and Ghislain Brown-Kossi. Matt Duffin explores the themes of solitude and irony through moody and “neurotically meticulous” encaustic wax paintings. He uses the stark contrast of extreme light and shadow, as well as strong compositional strategies, to enhance his implied narratives creating works that are simultaneously dark and humorous. Ghislain Brown-Kossi’s childhood in France and Ivory Coast heritage feed his work as an archeological pop artist. Mixed dialects and cultures inspire his colorful, bold, and geometric work with hieroglyphic symbols emerging through sand. Gilman will also present works by local artist Jill Lear, Brazilian artist Thai Mainhard, and Hunt Slonem whose art can be found in the permanent collections of 250 museums around the world including the Solomon R. Is the Big Wood River healthy? As with any ecological system, that is a complicated question that will take a lot of science, data, and study to determine. Anecdotally, community members of the Wood River Valley have very different answers. Some people look at the stunning beauty of the river on a fall day and can’t imagine a better picture of the word “vibrant,” while others may notice that they’re catching less fish than they used to and therefore think of the river as somehow less healthy than it once was, or could be. One way to determine the health of an ecosystem is to look at the living creatures that live within it! Aquatic macroinvertebrates are small animals that live in water, are big enough to see with the naked eye, and have no backbone. These animals include many types of insects as well as other animals such as worms, mollusks, and crustaceans. Most aquatic macroinvertebrates make their homes in rocks, leaves, and the sediment of streambeds. These aquatic creatures are excellent for studying when trying to find out how healthy an ecosystem is. Dark Sky Dinner events feature a “farm to greenhouse” catered meal with wine for 40 people in our heated greenhouse, a “snow bar” and warming fire pits outside the greenhouse, and night sky viewing telescopes outside on the darker, north side of the Visitor Center. You don’t have to be as crazy as some of Shakespeare’s characters in Hamlet to feel that keying out plants can be a maddening experience. In this beginner’s look at keying, Lisa Horton will tease our curiosity with a painless activity introducing the dichotomous plant key. We’ll talk about how and why plants got their names, learn a little terminology and then plunge into keying out some plants to genus level. You’ll leave having had some fun and learned a little bit. Lisa Horton holds a M.S. in Plant Anatomy and is one of the usual suspects leading our Wood River Chapter plant walks. She has also made a number of wildflower videos for Eye on Sun Valley. Join the Friends of the Sawtooth Avalanche Center instructors for a field day covering avalanche rescue basics, snowpack layering, avalanche terrain identification, and basic backcountry travel. Please note-you need to have attended a Friends’ Introduction to Avalanches lecture prior to participating in the field day. “Ski for Air Service Day Returns on January 22 with $60 Lift Tickets at Sun Valley” After a two year hiatus due to COVID-19, Fly Sun Valley Alliance (FSVA) and the Sun Valley Resort have teamed up again to present Ski for Air Service Day by offering a full-day $60 lift ticket for skiing at Sun Valley on Sunday, January 22, 2023. All proceeds from Ski for Air Service Day will support air service at Sun Valley. A limited number of the discounted $60 Ski for Air Service Day lift tickets will be available for sale in advance, for cash or credit card purchase only, from Friday, January 13 through Saturday, January 21 at the following local ski & snowboard shops: Sturtevant’s – Ketchum (Main Street, Limelight Hotel, Warm Springs) and Hailey, Board Bin, and PKs Ski & Sports. Board Bin and PK’s Ski & Sports will take phone sales with credit card. No $60 lift tickets will be sold on January 22. Lift ticket purchases are cash or credit card only and not refundable.
