Malm Gulch hike with Idaho Native Plant Society @ Hailey Park and Ride lot
12:00 am
That’s One Big Tree! Each year we have featured a mega-size tree for this fall hike. In a quirky twist, we are going to feature a whole petrified forest this year. We will drive to Malm Gulch (near Challis) for a real adventure. Malm Gulch was much different 50 million years ago. It was a sequoia forest with a carpet of ferns underfoot. Today, petrified stumps of those redwoods still stand in a beautiful desert landscape with some verrrrry interesting plant species. Medium Difficulty rated hike for the uneven footing, around 3 miles in length. Vehicles should have high clearance to get to the trail head (my Subaru Outback made it most of the way). Meet at HP&R to leave by 8:00 am (please arrive by 7:45). We can carpool from there and collapse down to less vehicles at the highway turnoff. This will take all day, and it will be worth it. If you are interested in camping afterwards with us at Challis Hot Springs, call 208-879-4442 for a reservation.

Nexus: One Is Not Enough film screening hosted by Wild Rye @ Sun Valley Opera House
6:00 pm
Nexus is a feature-length ski film featuring an all-female cast of skiers. The film follows five distinct groups of female skiers, their connection to the mountains and how the sport shaped their relationships. From the Chugach Mountains in Alaska to the Grand Tetons in Wyoming, Nexus uses these dramatic backdrops to explore the lessons these athletes have learned on their skis. The film touches on human themes of adversity, strength, and friendship through each powder stash and couloir skied. “For years, top women in the ski industry have heard the same sentiment ‘we already have a girl in this segment, one is enough’,” said Michelle Parker, one of the industry’s most prominent freeskiers and Nexus athlete. “If we want to see change in this industry, we need to be the ones out there moving it forward. Nexus is a milestone this industry was long overdue for.” Featuring Michelle Parker, Brooklyn Bell, Veronica Paulsen, Caite Zeliff, Lucy Sackbauer, Ingrid Stensvaag, Krystin Norman, and Sasha Dingle. Wild Rye is a Wood River Valley based apparel company dedicated to bringing women-identifying individuals beautiful and technical mountain apparel that inspires confidence and gets more women outside. As they dream of their promised land, a stranger wanders into their space with his own agenda and derails their plans. Emotional and lyrical, Pass Over crafts everyday profanities into poetic and humorous riffs, exposing the unquestionable human spirit of young men stuck in a cycle that they are desperately trying to escape. A provocative riff on the Book of Exodus and Waiting for Godot, Pass Over is a remarkable work of politically-charged theater by a bold new American voice.” There have been several landmark productions of Pass Over since its premiere. The Spot is proud to share that we will be producing the newest version of the play, revised in 2021 to offer a different ending to this cycle of violence and injustice– one of hope. “THRILLING, POETICAL, and UNFLINCHING.”- Chris Jones, Chicago Tribune SUITABILITY: PASS ...

Las Cafeteras @ Wood River High School Performing Arts Theatre | Hailey | Idaho | United States
7:30 pm
Born and raised East of the Los Angeles River, Las Cafeteras are remixing roots music as modern-day troubadours. They are a sonic explosion of Afro-Mexican rhythms, electronic beats and powerful rhymes that document stories of a community seeking to “build a world where many worlds fit.” From Afro-Mexican to Americana, from Soul to Son Jarocho, from Roots to Rock and Hip Hop, Las Cafeteras take folk music to the future. Las Cafeteras honor the past by using electrifying traditional instrumentation like the eight-string Jarana, four-string Requinto, Quijada (donkey jawbone) and Tarima (a wooden platform). Las Cafeteras sing in five distinct languages, English, Spanish, Spanglish, Love and Justice…and they believe everyone understands at least one of those languages.
