New Paintings Exhibition at Gilman Contemporary @ Gilman Contemporary | Sun Valley | Idaho | United States
12:00 am
This fall Gilman Contemporary is featuring new work by four representational painters who each have a unique way of abstracting the recognizable. Laura Schiff Bean, Craig Mooney, John Westmark, and Jill Leareach bring a distinctive perspectives and materials to their canvases. Craig Mooney is known for creating cinematic oil paintings that incorporate and manipulate light. In his figurative paintings, women are captured in moments of repose and are presented in an atmosphere often described as dreamlike. His cityscapes offer a glimpse of suspended time, both familiar and illusory. Regardless of the subject matter, Mooney’s brush strokes and color work create a viewpoint that transcends the subject, by nearly abstracting the familiar to create a dramatic perspective. Laura Schiff Bean’s dramatic dress portraits stem from her interest in the human psyche along with her fascination with dresses. Each are characterized by the absence of a physical body making each work anonymous but with its own personality. Book Launch: "Miners' Moon" by Julie Weston @ The Community Library
6:00 pm
Join The Community Library for the launch of local author Julie Weston’s newest book, “Miners’ Moon.” Nellie Burns and her dog Moonshine travel with the Basque sheriff, Charlie Azgo as his official photographer to north Idaho to investigate local officials involved in moonshining and bribery. Before they even begin that investigation, a mysterious explosion in the local mine kills several miners, and the sheriff is recruited to find out if it was a planned crime. Rosy Kipling, the one-eyed miner and Nell’s friend, goes down the mine to listen and pry. Nellie questions hurt miners, a local madam, takes photographs, and, as is sometimes her habit, she explores on her own. Moonshine is a key figure in one of the disasters that befalls the group. And Nellie rises to the occasion when a rock burst nearly eliminates her companions. All four of them long for their high desert home in the Wood River Valley, but cannot return until they expose the secrets and lay bare the criminals before their luck runs out. Julie Weston is the award-winning author of three Nellie Burns and Moonshine novels: Moonscape, Basque Moon, and Moonshadows, and of the nonfiction book, The Good Times Are All ...

A mysterious “Christmas Phantom”, known for vandalizing the yard displays, threatens to throw the contest into turmoil and has the contestants on edge. Among the subplots are Stanley Bumiller’s attempts to end his probation and leave Tuna, Bertha Bumiller’s struggle to hold her family together at Christmastime, and Joe Bob Lipsey’s fight to mount successfully his production of A Christmas Carol despite the town controller of the electric company threatening to turn the lights off.
