Returning for its 12th year, SVFF kicks off another five days of Films, Coffee Talks, Parties and more. SVFF supports independent film and the magic of storytelling. It’s mission to celebrate and award filmmakers who are established and emerging has earned the Festival accolades by the film industry, film festival goers, film lovers, and filmmakers. The year-round Sun Valley Film Initiative develops professionals and illuminates the process of filmmaking, propelling emerging voices with grants and education. Since 2012 the Sun Valley Film Festival has invited fans and filmmakers to America’s first ski resort to celebrate the magic of storytelling. In the past, Festival guests include Hollywood legends such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Clint Eastwood, Jodie Foster, Geena Davis, and Oliver Stone as well as avant-garde writers and filmmakers like Stephen Gaghan and Mark and Jay Duplass. With over 4,000 yearly attendees, SVFF has become known as the Festival for Filmmakers. The Sun Valley Film Festival is a 501(c)(3) non-profit. U.S Alpine Championships

Sun Valley Resort is excited to host the Toyota U.S. Alpine Championships presented by Stifel kicking off April 2 and welcoming elite and next-generation ski racers vying for spots on the Stifel U.S. Alpine Ski Team. The racing event, which runs April 2-5, is the final competition on the hotly contended US national ski racing circuit and is the culmination of a season-long showcase of the best of the best in US ski racing athleticism. Saturday starts the week of events with training opportunities for racers and a sponsor village and live apres music in Warm Springs Plaza. Sunday, April 2, the racing kicks off with men’s and women’s super-G followed by Clicquot in the Snow Party at Warm Springs and the Opening Ceremony at Town Square in Ketchum featuring a Parade of Athletes and a free concert by Lowdown Brass Band. The 6th Annual Sun Valley Tour de Force on July 20-22, 2023 is a weekend of epic proportions for car lovers of all ages. Eight events take place over the course of three days. The signature event of the weekend is the ‘NO SPEED LIMIT’ high speed runs at Phantom Hill. Located in the heart of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, 3.2 miles of state highway becomes a no-speed limit zone. For one day only, drivers are allowed to put their machines to the ultimate test. In 2019, all previously recorded speed records were broken when a Bugatti Chiron hit 253.01mph. This is truly an experience of a lifetime. Additional weekend events include scenic drives, SVTdF Car Show at Festival Meadows, hosted sponsor events and our fundraiser; Cars & Comedy. Now celebrating its 29th year, SVWC 2023 will be held Saturday, July 22 through Monday, July 24 at the stunning Sun Valley Resort and Pavilion. The Sun Valley Music Festival’s 39th Summer Season presents a star-studded lineup of guest artists for over three weeks of free concerts in the beautiful, natural surroundings of Sun Valley, Idaho. Pianists Yefim Bronfman and Orli Shaham, mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke, and violinist Augustin Hadelich will headline concerts featuring works by Schumann, Ravel, Mahler, and Tchaikovsky. Other programs include works by contemporary American composers including Mason Bates, Michael Abels, and Michael Tilson Thomas. For a very special Pops Night, Stéphane Denève, Music Director of the St. Louis Symphony, will lead the Festival Orchestra in an evening of the music of John Williams. Major orchestral repertoire will include Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 (the season finale) and Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. With an education built upon classical training, Steele utilizes the processes of the old masters with a contemporary sensibility; never staying in one place for too long. The result is a clever, wide-ranging body of work – from still life to portrait to landscape (and often somewhere in between) – melding art history and pop culture references in his ever-changing process. “Building this exhibition was a diverse experience, from dabbling in sculptural work to developing a multi-piece interpretation of Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup through the lenses of some of my favorite artists and art styles,” says Steele. “Getting to study and emulate the style and craft of these images throughout my career has brought me immense purpose. Each December Gilman Contemporary celebrates the diversity of the artists they bring to Sun Valley with a dynamic group exhibition. This year the gallery teases future summer exhibitions including Carmen McNall and Mayme Kratz, who will have solo exhibitions in 2023. Also featured in December’s group exhibit are gallery newcomers Matt Duffin and Ghislain Brown-Kossi. Matt Duffin explores the themes of solitude and irony through moody and “neurotically meticulous” encaustic wax paintings. He uses the stark contrast of extreme light and shadow, as well as strong compositional strategies, to enhance his implied narratives creating works that are simultaneously dark and humorous. Ghislain Brown-Kossi’s childhood in France and Ivory Coast heritage feed his work as an archeological pop artist. Mixed dialects and cultures inspire his colorful, bold, and geometric work with hieroglyphic symbols emerging through sand. Gilman will also present works by local artist Jill Lear, Brazilian artist Thai Mainhard, and Hunt Slonem whose art can be found in the permanent collections of 250 museums around the world including the Solomon R. UPBEAT WITH ALASDAIR The Rite of Spring: 110 Years Old and Still Breaking the Rules It’s hard to imagine a piece of classical music causing a riot, but that’s the word often applied to the audience’s reaction when Igor Stravinsky’s ballet The Rite of Spring debuted in 1913 in Paris. Apparently, the arguments between those who loved it and those who hated it became so heated the dancers couldn’t hear the orchestra! Stravinsky’s music (and Nijinsky’s choreography) broke with tradition so dramatically that the piece is often called the first example of modernism in music. In this installation of Upbeat with Alasdair, Maestro Alasdair Neale will describe not just the innovation, but the beauty of Rite of Spring, which the Festival will present during the upcoming Summer Season.

Join us for a presentation based on the Know Before You Go platform, introducing basic concepts about snow, avalanches, and traveling safely in and near avalanche terrain. Learn from the Friends of Sawtooth Avalanche Center instructor team of snow experts, mountain guides, and experienced avalanche educators. We invite everyone to join if you’re learning about avalanches for the first time or are a seasoned backcountry user ready for a yearly refresher. No registration is needed to attend in person. The SAC will also be hosting field days the following weekend.

Please note-you need to have attended a Friends’ Introduction to Avalanches lecture prior to participating in the field day. See www.sawtoothavalanche.com for lecture dates or email [email protected] to get a virtual copy of the lecture. We have moved to a pre-registration system for courses due to high demand! BCRD Ski Free Day!

BCRD Nordic and Snowshoe Trails

For four days this season, BCRD welcomes the community to enjoy free Nordic skiing and snowshoeing on all BCRD winter trails. The 32-kilometer multi-use Wood River Trail, which runs from Ketchum to Bellevue, is always free. The Wood River Trail is groomed every other day and is open to skiers, walkers, dogs, and fat-bikes. The Ski Free Days for the 2022/23 season are: Saturday, December 10 Sunday, January 8 Saturday, February 25 Wednesday, March 22 For Ski Free Day on Saturday December 10th at Galena: – Free rentals at Galena (no reservations) – Free 30 minute skate or classic group lessons at 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, and 1:00 (no reservations – just walk into the shop)

Clearly Indigenous: Native Visions Reimagined in Glass

Dr. Letitia Chambers will present a program discussing glass art created by American Indian artists. Chambers is the curator of the exhibit “Clearly Indigenous: Native Visions Reimagined in Glass,” which is slated to travel to ten major museums around the U.S. over the next four years. She also authored the beautifully illustrated book of the same name, which is now in its third printing. The exhibit includes 120 glass art creations and tells the story of how glass art came to Indian Country. Leading glass artist Dale Chihuly was the first to introduce glass blowing to American Indian students, which has led over the past 50 years to the creation of an exceptional body of work. In turn, Chihuly was influenced by Native arts. The reciprocal nature of this influence, with Chihuly’s own art enhanced by the inspiration of Native design, is a serendipitous result. Chihuly’s first Native-inspired works in glass were created in 1975, shortly after he created a glass art curriculum and taught at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe. Chihuly’s first Native-inspired works in glass incorporated glass threads fused onto the surface of blown cylinders to create designs based on patterns in Navajo weaving. ...
