The Foyer of Community Library In Ketchum is housing 21 exquisite art glass cylinders from renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly. With this extraordinary body of work, Chihuly aims to convey his appreciation and respect for the histories, cultures, and arts of the Indigenous tribes of North America, and to recognize the influence of Native cultures on contemporary arts.

Each December Gilman Contemporary celebrates the diversity of the artists they bring to Sun Valley with a dynamic group exhibition. This year the gallery teases future summer exhibitions including Carmen McNall and Mayme Kratz, who will have solo exhibitions in 2023. Also featured in December’s group exhibit are gallery newcomers Matt Duffin and Ghislain Brown-Kossi. Matt Duffin explores the themes of solitude and irony through moody and “neurotically meticulous” encaustic wax paintings. He uses the stark contrast of extreme light and shadow, as well as strong compositional strategies, to enhance his implied narratives creating works that are simultaneously dark and humorous. Ghislain Brown-Kossi’s childhood in France and Ivory Coast heritage feed his work as an archeological pop artist. Mixed dialects and cultures inspire his colorful, bold, and geometric work with hieroglyphic symbols emerging through sand. Gilman will also present works by local artist Jill Lear, Brazilian artist Thai Mainhard, and Hunt Slonem whose art can be found in the permanent collections of 250 museums around the world including the Solomon R. For four days this season, BCRD welcomes the community to enjoy free Nordic skiing and snowshoeing on all BCRD winter trails. The 32-kilometer multi-use Wood River Trail, which runs from Ketchum to Bellevue, is always free. The Wood River Trail is groomed every other day and is open to skiers, walkers, dogs, and fat-bikes. The Ski Free Days for the 2022/23 season are: Saturday, December 10 Sunday, January 8 Saturday, February 25 Wednesday, March 22 For Ski Free Day on Saturday December 10th at Galena: – Free rentals at Galena (no reservations) – Free 30 minute skate or classic group lessons at 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, and 1:00 (no reservations – just walk into the shop)

The Hailey Public Library continues its occasional Lunch & Learn series with “Wildlife vs Winter – How We Can Help,” a free talk by Idaho Fish and Game Regional Wildlife Population Biologist Sierra Robatcek on Thursday, January 12, from noon-1:00 PM at Town Center West. The Hailey Public Library will host a free memoir writing workshop with author and award-winning journalist Tony Tekaroniake Evans on Tuesdays, January 17, 24, 31 and February 7 from 5:30 – 7:30 PM at Town Center West. The workshop will cover basic planning and explorations for autobiographical writings. It will include weekly writing assignments and sharing of work that will address themes, characters, locations, tone of voice and overall writing goals. Zero human activity, the silence of falling snow in one of the most remote places on earth is enchanting and reflective.” -Tuck Fauntleroy Fauntleroy’s focus for his Burn series are wildfire affected regions in Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park. They represent a mixed perspective with some images shot aerially and others shot from the ground. Like much if his other work, the aerial images were captured flying over the territory via small single engine airplanes from an open window for an unobstructed lens. Burn is timely and relevant in the current environment of climate change and the proliferation of recent fires across the western US and globally. The massive 1988 Yellowstone fires were a wake-up-call and significant warning of destruction and foreshadowing of the cost of climate events. Warming, drought, and the resulting fires have never been more dangerous. The photographs are careful compositions of positive and negative space while capturing the elegant lines and shapes created by a natural landscape scared by flame. You don’t have to be as crazy as some of Shakespeare’s characters in Hamlet to feel that keying out plants can be a maddening experience. In this beginner’s look at keying, Lisa Horton will tease our curiosity with a painless activity introducing the dichotomous plant key. We’ll talk about how and why plants got their names, learn a little terminology and then plunge into keying out some plants to genus level. You’ll leave having had some fun and learned a little bit. Lisa Horton holds a M.S. in Plant Anatomy and is one of the usual suspects leading our Wood River Chapter plant walks. She has also made a number of wildflower videos for Eye on Sun Valley. Footlight Dance Company presents a free educational performance for the public on Wednesday, January 25, 2:45pm at the Community Campus Theater, Hailey. This performance will look at 5 of the more than 600 endangered animal species in the US that are either threatened or on the brink of extinction due to habitat loss, poaching, climate change and other factors that eliminate species living around us across the US. The 17 company dancers will use the genres of ballet, modern, jazz, tap and hip hop for our message of conservation and education.

Strap on some snowshoes and check out the Sawtooth National Recreation Area’s winter wonderland! Learn about the history of the Galena Lodge area and the magical landscape of winter ecology and animal tracking. January 5th – March 23 – Snowshoe with a Ranger every Thursday at 11 am. Meet on the porch of Galena Lodge. Program lasts about 2 hours and covers 1.5 miles with stops along the way. Rent snowshoes online ahead of time from Galena Lodge (see below). To register for the tour call SNRA at 208-727-5000. Each tour will be limited to 10 people. ​Dress warmly in layers and wear insulated boots, gloves, hat, sunglasses and mask.

Blaine County Recreation District invites the community to join in the free 2023 Wood River Trail Challenge, which runs from January 27 through February 28 To complete the challenge, participants must ski, walk, snowshoe, or snowbike the entire 32 kilometers of the Wood River Trail, from Hulen Meadows in Ketchum to Gannett Road in Bellevue. Participants may tackle the challenge all at once or break the trail up into sections and complete them between January 27 – February 28. Finishers will need to complete and mail a form to receive a prize from the BCRD. The Wood River Trail is a 32-kilometer multi-use, year-round path that provides a non-motorized connection between the Wood River Valley communities of Bellevue, Hailey, Ketchum, and Sun Valley. BCRD grooms the Wood River Trail in the winter and provides this resource free for all users. MAP HERE
