Save the dates for summer 2023: July 30 – August 24. The Sun Valley Music Festival’s 39th Summer Season presents a star-studded lineup of guest artists for over three weeks of free concerts in the beautiful, natural surroundings of Sun Valley, Idaho. Pianists Yefim Bronfman and Orli Shaham, mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke, and violinist Augustin Hadelich will headline concerts featuring works by Schumann, Ravel, Mahler, and Tchaikovsky. Other programs include works by contemporary American composers including Mason Bates, Michael Abels, and Michael Tilson Thomas. For a very special Pops Night, Stéphane Denève, Music Director of the St. Louis Symphony, will lead the Festival Orchestra in an evening of the music of John Williams. Major orchestral repertoire will include Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 (the season finale) and Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. The annual fundraising Gala Concert will take place on August 8 (details will be released in mid-February). The concerts are free (except for the Gala), and available for everyone to enjoy at the Sun Valley Pavilion, whether inside or on the big lawn. Black History Month. Come and see the painting “Knowledge Is Power” by Myriam Esther. The painting is inspired by Ruby Bridges, the first African American to attend a white school in the New Orlean school district. She had to be escorted in and out of school by police officers for her safety. Although Bridges is not the exact girl in this painting, she served as Esther’s inspiration for this work of art. Acrylic on canvas: 60 x 48 x 2.5 inches.

Also on display are paintings from the “Love Collection”, the “Snow Collection” Inspired by the abundant Sun Valley Wildlife and the “Defiance Collection” that reflects the artist’s emotional reaction to stories and historical personalities around the world.

Friesen+Lantz Fine Art presents a bold new body of work from encaustic artist Suzanne Hazlett. Encaustic painting is a technique dating back to the Greeks, blending fire with wax and pigment to fuse the material with a rigid surface. “I am a rock climber and a stargazer seeking a balance between celestial inspiration and earthly reality,” says Hazlett. “Incorporated in this collection are influences from stone, land formations, skyscapes, and atmosphere, as well as stars and nebulae.”
“This is a rare body of work in an artist’s career—one that unequivocally marks a dramatic expansion in their craft and the beginning of an exciting chapter,” Friesen+Lantz Owner/Director Yanna Lantz says. “Hazlett is pushing the boundaries of encaustic in her inventive forms, incredible depth and combinations of colors that transport viewers to another realm.”

Join us along with Paul Martineau, Curator of Photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum and Leslie Smolan, Executive Director of the Rodney Smith Estate, in celebrating the release of Rodney Smith: A Leap of Faith published by Getty Publications.

Born in New York City, Rodney Smith (1947-2016) developed his extraordinary eye over the course of 4 decades. Starting his career as a photo-essayist he found his stride with portrait photography which led to his greatest art in fashion photography. His sophisticated compositions and stylish characters exist in a timeless world of grand, romantic scenes with quiet allure while also reflecting his innate playfulness with whimsical and surreal visual twists.

Each year SVGA hosts multiple gallery walks (exhibition openings for all SVGA galleries), which are eagerly anticipated and free to the public.
