SUMMARY:Ketchum’s Philadelphia Smelter: How History Came to Life through 
 a Painting
DESCRIPTION:Certainly\, the most consequential business in the early days o
 f the Wood River Valley was Ketchum's Philadelphia Smelter. Built in 1881\,
  the smelter led the way in innovation and prosperity and created the condi
 tions for a boom in population\, transportation\, and mechanization. When t
 he Wood River Museum was made aware of a painting of the smelter by an anti
 ques dealer on the East Coast\, the wheels were set in motion for trying to
  extract all the information possible on the painting's origins and to find
  out more about the operations of the smelter itself.\\n\\nTwo local histor
 ians and researchers\, John Lundin and Jack Lane\, have undertaken a deep d
 ive into this research and painting. The painting is the featured artwork f
 or the 2026 Wagon Days poster\, and this lecture will reveal the historical
  significance of the smelter itself during its heyday and demise\, as well 
 as the origins of the painting and how and where it might have been created
 .\\n\\nJohn "Jack" Lane was the director of the Carnegie Museum of Art (198
 0-1986)\, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (1987-1997)\, and the Dall
 as Museum of Art (1998-2008). His family has been a mainstay of Ketchum sin
 ce the 1910s. John W. Lundin is a lawyer\, historian\, and author who split
 s his time between Seattle and Sun Valley.  Arriving in the early 1880s\, 
 his family was one of the first to settle in the Wood River Valley and Shos
 hone. He is the author of numerous magazine and journal articles and four a
 ward winning books.
