SUMMARY:Sun Valley Opera and Broadway presents the final MetHD screening of
the season – El Ultimo Sueno de Frieda y Diego
DESCRIPTION:On May 30\, the Metropolitan Opera’s 2025–26 Live in HD sea
son comes to a close with a live transmission of American composer Gabriela
  Lena Frank’s first opera\, a magical-realist portrait of Mexico’s pain
terly power couple Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera\, with libretto by Pulitzer
Prize–winning playwright Nilo Cruz. Fashioned as a reversal of the Orphe
us and Euridice myth\, the story depicts Frida\, sung by leading mezzo-sopr
ano Isabel Leonard\, leaving the underworld on the Day of the Dead and reun
iting with Diego\, portrayed by baritone Carlos Álvarez. The famously feud
ing pair briefly relive their tumultuous love\, embracing both the passion
and the pain before bidding the land of the living a final farewell. Music
Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the Met-premiere staging of Frank
s opera\, a “confident\, richly imagined score” (The New Yorker) that
“bursts with color and fresh individuality” (Los Angeles Times). The v
ibrant new production\, taking enthusiastic inspiration from Frida and Dieg
o’s paintings\, is directed and choreographed by Deborah Colker. This liv
e cinema transmission is part of the Met’s award-winning Live in HD serie
s\, bringing opera to movie theaters across the globe.\\nTo find the music
to depict a story playing out across multiple planes of existence\, Frank h
as created a rich soundscape that ranges from eerily suggestive to exuberan
tly melodic. Her orchestration draws upon a wide musical palette\, juxtapos
ing traditional instrumentation with elements of mariachi and Mexican folkl
oric music. The marimba\, a significant instrument in Mexican and Central A
merican music\, features prominently\, often contributing an otherworldly\,
  mysterious color.
