SUMMARY:OPENING NIGHT PARTY: CHARLOTTE HEMMINGS – PHANTOM WEST
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the OPENING NIGHT PARTY of PHANTOM WEST\, a
solo exhibition by Charlotte Hemmings. As part of the local gallery walk ev
ening\, Hemmings Gallery invites you to come meet the artist and learn more
about the inspiration behind her work.\\n\\nArtist Charlotte Hemmings' mix
ed media works probe the mythology of the American West\, where the spectac
le of the rodeo is both subject and metaphor. Hyper-iconic imagery drawn fr
om cowboy and rodeo traditions is transferred onto canvas\, then deliberate
ly dismantled through paint—gestural marks\, drips\, and swaths of raw pi
gment pulling clarity into collapse. Horses charge into chromatic noise\, f
lags dissolve into paint’s physicality\, and dust becomes pure pigment. W
hat begins as an iconic spectacle shifts into a fractured\, shimmering resi
due of memory and myth.\\n\\nThis process opens a dialogue about how cultur
al narratives are constructed\, romanticized\, and revised. For the artist\
, that conversation is personal. "As an Idaho native now distanced from ful
ly rural rhythms\, I stand in a liminal space—close enough to feel the pu
ll of heritage\, yet distant enough to see its contradictions. The rodeo—
already a performance of myth—becomes even more performative\, refracted
through technological and painterly lenses. What remains is neither fixed h
istory nor pure invention\, but something in between: a luminous vision of
the West suspended between belonging and estrangement\, heritage and reinve
 ntion\," says Hemmings.
