SUMMARY:GALLERY WALK OPENING NIGHT RECEPTION with THOM ROSS
DESCRIPTION:Hemmings Gallery is pleased to present the Opening Night Recept
ion of the solo exhibition by Thom Ross with the artist in attendance on Ju
ly 11th\, 5:00-7:30pm.\\n\\nBest known for his striking depictions of the A
merican West\, Ross describes himself as “a storyteller who paints.” Pa
cked with vibrant colors\, bold brushstrokes and kinetic imagery\, Ross’
paintings restore a liveliness and complexity to often oversimplified\, sta
le depictions of frontier America.\\n\\nFor nearly fifty years\, he has del
ved into the overlooked corners and footnotes of history for inspiration:
The American West is a canvas\, a place where history and myth collide…
Using bright colors\, abstracted forms and a contemporary style of paintin
g\, my desire is to pull these historical figures from a dim\, often misund
erstood past into the present moment.”\\n\\nIn addition to his paintings\
, Ross has illustrated over twenty books including a history of baseball an
d produced numerous installations featuring life-sized cutout figures depic
ting historical events. In 1984\, he created “The Catch”\, a diorama fo
r the Baseball Hall of Fame illustrating a legendary catch with the same ni
ckname by Willie Mays in the 1954 World Series. Ross’ 2005 work\, “Cust
er’s Last Stand”\, was a recreation of over one hundred life-sized warr
iors & horses in the Battle of Little Bighorn at the original site of Medic
 ine Tail Coulee in Montana.
